Talking with a buddy and he informed me that ABC's Detroit affiliate has gone all Final Cut Pro X. Wondering how many other newsrooms have or are planning to go this route. Also curious to see how the Adobe CC announcement is going to effect shops going forward?

Thank you for this information. It's a phenomenon I start seeing in many places now. If there is any field in which FCPX really excels it is exactly in news and general broadcast post-producion. I don't think CC has anything to do with this.

The list of "Pro" users keeps getting longer by the day. It's great news for FCPX editors looking for editing work. Are there any online market place for editing work, like an eLance.com (or similar sites)?

Can we get someone out there to interview them? Just switching to FCPX isn't enough, we need to get people explaining why and talking about their workflows. If I didn't live in SF I would totally do this, I love talking to people who get the potential of FCPX.

Grailz, do you think you could make something like this happen?

Hey Simon. Thanks for that link...good stuff. I have to ask. In the story he mentions an auto eq that matches other sound files. Which one is this that he speaks of?????

Interesting read - think FCPX would be great for news channels/crews currently using FCP7 on laptops etc. The Creative Cow piece looks interesting but most news packages are thrown together much much faster (or increasingly, on location in a hotel room/back of a truck). FCP7 is still a relatively slow workflow for this - X would be much quicker.

Being able to export off the timeline is a selling point in itself.

Indeed, and yes FCPX is extremely fit for this kind of work. I really wanted to post a detailed article here about how we have used FCPX intensively during the latest Olympic and Paralympic games, editing daily packages for our national broadcaster. Unfortunately our client won't give me clearance because it's their company policy not to disclose any workflows to the public.

But I can say it was a very pleasant experience. When one of our para-athletes won silver and gold two days in a row we even did a live news coverage over satellite 30 minutes after her last race, mixing a live interview of her with an edit of her race streaming straight from the FCPX timeline on a MacBookPro/AJA SDI into the video mixer in the upload van. Great experience indeed.

Ew yeah I remember those. One night I had to manually roll in the second half of my story live. (a Current Affair) but also did numerous live rolls to air straight from the suite. You'd sit there watching your story go out knowing you hadn't even watched it back once. Praying you'd covered all the jump cuts.
No wonder I used to drink so much back then. :S

I must admit if I was setting up a news room there is no way in hell I'd consider FCP X.

I once produced a half hour news special - edited on the day. We were still laying off Part 2 to tape when Part 1 went to the ad break. I still have the grey hairs I think.

Why not FCPX for news? They're currently cutting on FCP7 in the UK, with its random crashes and foibles.

Can you see all the grey hairs on my photo? Now you know where I got them from :)

But seriously, IMO FCPX is already perfectly fit for any small to medium news environment. Two of our regional tv clients are waiting for the switch until the next update, just to see if there are any technical changes in collaborative workflow or not. But they already have some standalone FCPX seats and they say they are very happy with them. I think this app really has a bright future in television.

Hey Julian,

Its something I can look into (though it'll be a bit before it will actually hit the upper echelon of my priority to-do stack.)
