for whatever reason, im unable to upload my footage to FCPX the usual way (plug in camera and press import), it just doesnt work.
ive been able to get my footage in my dragging it from iPhoto to the timeline. But i found a different way and i want to get someones opinion on it. Heres how I do it:
I go to Window, in the Window tab i go to Media Browser and then click Photos. On the right side of the timeline, all of my photos and videos pop up. It has all of my footage and i can drag it over to the timeline and edit.
Is there anything wrong with that? Would it ruin the ability to put it on a dvd later on?

It just doesn't work means squat. What's the footage? What are you doing and what happens when you do it?
Bring it in from iPhoto? Nobody can tell you because nobody knows anything about the specs of your video.

Everything. Everything it says in the QT player's movie inspector about the media. It might help to know where this came from, camera, make, model, settings.

You need to import that directly into FCP, not through iPhoto. The application works with this media and imports it directly, either as native QuickTime or optimized into ProRes.

I don't go through the camera. I take out the SD card and import footage with the SD reader built into my iMac. I do this with a GH2 and it works no problem.
I haven't used the 5D, does it use a regular SD card or something else? For some reason I feel like I've heard it importing weird or something? I really don't know and am realizing this post is useless.

Well, just assuming that the OP uses FCPX 10.0.8 (true?), it is no problem uploading media from the 5DM3. Just take the CF card out, put it into a card reader and you're ready to go. The card will show up in the import window with all the files in list or film strip view.
