Assigning REEL names for Resolve Conform was created by Scott Markowitz
I was wondering if anyone has had experience round-tripping from FCPX to Resolve?
My main question is about assigning Reel names to clips once they have been imported into FCPX.
If a clip is shot (say on a 7D) and is imported into FCPX from the Flash card it doesn't have a reel name embedded in the meta-data.
Then, let's say, Reel numbers are assigned inside FCPX to organize the clips.
In this case, how would Resolve Conform the clips? It would get XML with Reel numbers, but the original 7D clips will not have Reel numbers.
a related question:
If you optimize your media after assigning Reel names and batch renaming the individual clips in FCPX, will the transcoded media have these names and reels embedded somewhere in their meta-data?

Resolve can read the FCPXML metadata, and store it associated with those clips. Not sure what you mean by "conform the clips". It keeps your Timeline intact.
Optimizing will carry over the metadata.

This issue has not been "Resolved" yet. (Get it.)
I'm trying to perform an offline/online workflow using X. Let be more specific.
I'm capturing DVCPro HD tapes to an Avid Isis storage using FCP 7 to facilitate the tape capture. (AJA Kona card DVI connection)
FCP7 is embedding Reel information in the ProRes Proxy clips it is creating.
The media is imported into FCPX as a soft import. (Media is not copied into the event folder- just pointers)
Edit is performed. XML goes to Resolve from my finished FCPX Project.
In Resolve 9- it refuses to bring over the Reel information from the FCPX project. If I import the same clips straight into Resolve, it sees the same Reel IDs that are embedded in the PrRes Proxies.
I can't figure out how to get Resolve to recognize the Reel info from the XML.

Hi Scott,
Do you have tape name extraction checked in Config > Project > Timeline Conform Options?
Click the Config tab, then the Project tab and in the Timeline Conform Options set Use Timecode to "Embedded in the source clip". Then check the box next to "Assist using reel numbers from the:" and click on "Embedding in source clip file".
The default project configuration has tape name extraction disabled. If you enable that you should see the Reel names in the Reel ID column of the media pool.

Yes. We have that checked off.
We're using a newer version of Resolve. 9.13
Maybe this is broken in this version of Resolve.
Any thoughts on that?

I'm not at the studio, I have 8 here at home (full) and I haven't updated yet as I rarely use it here.
We do use 9 (full) at work and AFAIK Reel numbers do transfer with FCPXML and they show up in the media pool when this option is checked on. With Alexa files we use the "Source clip file pathname" option because Alexa QT files have embedded tape name. Cannot say for sure if we are on 9.13 yet. I usually don't let anyone update to the latest version of a software until I'm sure it has passed the "bug detection period". I will check tomorrow.

Thanks for checking into this for me. It's driving me nuts.
On another note. We generated an XML from a fcp7 project that referenced the same source footage. Resolve pulled in the reel info correctly from the fcp7 XML. Weird.

Now that's interesting. We don't use FCP7 anymore and when we still did we usually graded in Color or Baselight. Lots of things have changed in two years ((-:

UPDATE
We have confirmed that media captured in fcp7 and imported into fcpx will not pass reel Id info along to resolve 9.
We will use EDL-X from XMiL software .
This software will allow us to generate a workable edl to be used back in FCP7 for us to batch capture online resolution media.
Resolve 9 will still be used to color correct (it will use the same edl file to make the conform timeline)
Then, we can render out the color corrected media, and make XML to have the last touches put on back in FCPX.
Thank you to everyone who's helped work this out.
Cheers
