Drop Zones for Templates NOT playing Video

More

I cannot get any drop zones in any template to playback a video clip. They accept the clip and only playback a still image. Most of the ones I've tried are Motion VFX templates, but also others. These have worked in the past, so is this an issue with 10.0.8?

OK...solved my own problem here. I dragged the video clips to the timeline so I could color grade them before placing into the drop zones. When the drop zones are populated from a clip in the timeline, they only playback a still image.

If I populate the drop zone from a clip in the event browser, then the video plays properly when the template plays back.

So, to provide a color graded clip in the drop zone, I drag a clip to the timeline, color grade it and then create a compound clip from it. Then I populate the drop zone with the graded compound clip and everything works perfectly. I'm not sure if this is the way it has always been, but I don't seem to recall having to go thru that.

I'd love to hear other opinions on this.

I'm working on an custom generator for someone, and am having major issues with behaviors and such that I didn't have before the latest update. Filled out the feedback form. There should technically be no reason to have to compound that clip first, just a bug.

Thanks for confirming. And I am also finding out now that creating the compound doesn't always work on the first try. A few times I had to populate the drop zone and then clear it and re-populate two or three times before it would work. What a hassle.

You can color grade the clip in the browser and drag it to the drop zone from there. No need to go to project and make the compound.

You're right , Tom. Thanks. But there still remains an issue. The drop zones are not respecting the in and out points if I mark them in the browser, so by creating a compound I seem to be getting the clip section I need. Otherwise it begins at the exact start of the clip.

Which generator is this exactly? Which drop zone? Are any of these not third party effects? I'm not seeing this problem in FCP's titles. The frame I select in the drop zone interface is the first frame of the video that appears in the drop zone. There was a problem in earlier versions of FCP, but this was fixed in 10.0.7 or 10.0.8. It's possible third party templates need to be updated.

I haven't noticed problems with FCPX titles either. Specifically I am using a variety of Motion VFX templates. The particular one I am trying to finish for a client is Motion VFX Project 015. But I have tried several, along with some Ripple Templates that appear to act the same way. For still images, the clip in point does match when placed into a drop zone, but for moving video it does not. This is happening on all drop zones within the template.

I now have the template working for the most part, but only by creating a compound clip and using that in the drop zone. Of the 9 drop zones in this template, all are working now but number 6 is still starting at the beginning of the clip when in fact it should start 4 seconds into that clip.

This is sounding like an update perhaps to the Motion VFX and other third part templates is needed, or got broken with 10.0.8.

The application was changed to correct a problem with drop zones. This may have caused the issue now with third party effects.

I think that's exactly what's going on. Some of the older Motion VFX templates are failing to show any published parameters, including drop zones.

I'm working on custom effects started in 10.0.8, and still having major Drop Zone issues. It is not totally fixed yet.

I've been finding it's all pretty messed up too now, regardless of whether it's an old or newly created template. Since they done that "requested" thing where compound clips created in the timeline are automatically added to the event it all went wrong and adding anything to a drop zone from a timeline is best avoided for now.

I got straight on the feedback when it first kicked in. It's all pretty rock solid from the event but there are so many uses for templates that require the timeline thing back. I've got a bit of a back log of stuff on the shelf that will hopefully work one day if they put it back.

It's clearly a BUG when you can apply the same browser clip 4 times in a row and the first three play as a still frame and finally the fourth plays as a video. Even with that the in and out points selected in the browser don't follow, and when creating a CC, they also sometimes don't follow (but there's a better chance of them doing so this way). Finally, after reapplying these clips via CC's several times over, I was able to complete the clients project. But this definitely needs to be fixed.

I don't get any problems populating drop zones from an event, they are always consistent and work fine.

I didn't have the same results when using a Motion VFX template. Did you also try to select in and out points on that browser clip?

I've analysed this quite deeply Dan as it's held back an update to my app. Same results with in and outs set, although it does ignore the outpoint and only considers the in point.

I had a bit of a chat with John (Vordio) recently that resulted in him noticing the differenced made to compound clips between Events and Projects and I've also noticed differences in the behaviours between Motion Drop Zones and the Source Zones that have started to appear. I may be wrong but from my eyes, looking under the GUI it all seems related.

I'll do a bit more experimenting with standard FCPX templates to see if I can duplicate my issues. I have noticed that some of the Motion VFX templates are not even showing any published parameters, yet they do have a clickable drop zone (but unable to drag anything to it).

As far as in and out points, yes, currently the out point would be redundant, but it would be nice to be able to set an out point and let the template back time itself to whatever in point it needs to ensure the exit frame stays in place.

I'm curious to here your results. Mine have been very consistent from an event but not so from a project.

I've had similar problems with drop zones for the last couple of updates. I used to select clips from the timeline (my preferred method because I've already broken down my selects at that point) but then I got the freeze frame issue. Only way round it for me seems to be creating a compound clip and chosing that instead. An annoying extra step and creates unnecessary bloat. This is with templates I've created in Motion - also with ones since the updates for both FCPX and Motion. I don't like the function of the start of the drop zone video beginning where you click the clip as it's way too inaccurate. Better to set an in point (or default to the clip trim mark/start) and the drop zone to respect that as your desired first frame.
