The relink function sucks

I get more and more angry about the Damn Relink function is incredibly rigid and ridiculous

I edit a psd file, add a layer and update, then FCPX will not relinke and claims that the file must be exactly similar to the first in size, aspect, etc.

I used it a lot in FCP7, and still in Motion but because of FCPX inflexible workflow tried to avoid it, but it is incredibly difficult and sometimes exaggerated extra work for something simple

I know it has been this way since version 1.0, but have never understood why, is there anyone who can give a adequate explanation of why FCPX is so impossible to relinke files, why can I not decide which files to relinke to what, I'm the user and king of my machine :woohoo:

I know it's metadata driven software, but it can surely be no big deal to allow the user to relinke to another file in any format, find it very limiting and surprising that this is so

what do you guts think and do?

I've had relinking issues too, but I'm not sure why. I believe that it was due to my really bad media management the first time I really worked on a larger project.

I never understood the whole "has to match exactly" part. Seems like it might have to do with compound clips? But if that's the case then that's a serious problem because every clip I use will be a compound clip because I'm always syncing audio to video.

I haven't had any issues recently, but I haven't worked on any larger projects. Better insight on the relinking process would be nice... Maybe I should read the manual to see what it says about that.

How about if you just delete the psd file from your timeline & media browser, then import the updated version?

I could do that, and a lot of other things, but when you got 20 or 100 files it will be a long day :woohoo:
I simply don't understand why its like that, its like being in prison and not be able to decide for yourself, the guards say that you have to walk around the building to get to your cell, but I want to take the escalator ..

looking for at serios workaround AND an explanation ...

anyone?

File a feature request, bug report with apple. Relinking needs to be better.

I second the request for better relinking. It requires an exact, unmodified match to work and is troublesome at best. Dealing with a large amount of clips with marked in and out points can be a real pain. I have requested the ability to save clip segments (not the entire clip) that are used within projects. If this ever happens, perhaps the relinking can be made to work more reliably.
