In May I will start a new big project (4TB) which I wan't to edit with FCPX on several computers. We have a big shared storage system (GB Labs SPACE).

I know FCP is not yet ideal for shared editing, but the only thing I want is that the different edit sets can work on the same material, but not the same sequence.

The material will mostly be ProRes and XDCAM HD.

I am thinking that every edit set gets is on SAN location and the original video files will be outside the SAN location, but on the same shared HD. So every SAN location will only work with referenced files.

But my problem is the following: I want FCPX to transcode to ProRes Proxy because I will work with Multicam, but when I do this, the proxy files will go into my own SAN location and the other edit sets can't see the proxy files. Does anyone knows how to get around this?

further more: should I Transcode the XDCAMHD material to Prores?

Any tips would be most welcome.

Thanks, Micha Blazer

Cross your fingers and hope that Apple has a big update coming in the next couple of weeks.

Other than that. Why not keep all the master footage on the SAN and create the EVENTS locally on each machine? Don't copy files to the Event when importing but do create local proxy files.

When I create the events local. I will use a lot of extra HD space. Especially when I have to transcode the XDCAM HD footage to ProRes. I think the original footage will be about 4TB.

What do you think about transcoding de XDCAMHD footage to ProRres?

Why do you have to transcode?

1. XD Cam is a NATIVE format for FCP X

2. You simply choose NOT to copy the media to the local drive.

Apart from creating Proxy Media of course. ;)
