I'm looking to do some simple scene editing on a new imac mini. Is that possible? Also, I saw there was a FCP X to FCP 7 converter program out there. Does that work? I have two editors for my documentary who are using FCP 7 and want a cheapter alternative to do some simple editing.

There are two apps, "Xto7" and "7toX", both by the same software developer. They work really well, but there are some limitations, as 7 and X don't handle some attributes the same way, or at all.
I've read posts from folk using a Mac Mini for small FCP X projects just fine.
Tell your other two editors to catch up and get FCP X.

Ok. Thanks. I did see those converters but if I import from 7, work on scene cuts, and then convert back, it should be ok you think?

I just bought a Mac Mini (Late 2012) 2.3Ghz i7 with 4GB of RAM (and replace those with 16 GB of RAM bought at macsales.com) and this thing flyes* with FCPx! I don´t use FCPx daily, just to test features and workflows and from time to time to edit very small things and it really goes fast. My media (ARRI Apple ProRes 4444 or H264 from a Canon 5D MII) is on an external USB3 drive. I have RED media but I didn´t test it yet.
I didn´t try this new machine with FCP7 but I had it in the old one and it worked just fine, so with this new configuration it should work better (I suppose it won´t be as fast as FCPx).
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
* My previous computer was a Mac Mini Intel Core2Duo 2.66Ghz with 4GB RAM and using FCPx was a pain... a very slow pain. But for testing it was fine.

Thanks for the info. Let me know if you use FCP7 on the new machine and how it responds.
