Export from FCPX - Rendering necessary? was created by Overturf
Hello all you nice people in this forum,
I've really learned a lot just reading here for quite a while, thanks for the input! Now it's time to post my first question. Might sound a bit stupid but I really couldn't figure it out so far.
--> When I export a project from FCPX, do I benefit from rendering it first? Or does the render process happen automatically when I export and is only necessary for smooth playback while editing?
Thanks for your help!
Sebastian

Tineline renders have no effect on exporting. The export process does its own, independent rendering.

Thanks, Ben. So just to clarify - if I do a timeline render it does in no way speed up my export, is that correct? (If so, boy, I should have known earlier. Wasted quite some time waiting for the render to finish before I exported...)

Thanks. I'm not a native speaker so I might take a little longer to understand sometimes, thanks for your patience.

No worries. Timeline has its own renders. Export has its own renders. The two have nothing to do with each other. Rendering before export has no benefit.

A rendered timeline will export a lot faster than an un rendered one if you are exporting the same codec as your timeline. For a rendered timeline FCPX just combines all the renders and copies it to the disk during export. For an un-rendered timeline FCPX has to render and write the timeline which is usually much slower, depending on what has to render.

Yes, brain fart, I stand corrected, if you're exporting to the same format as the render files, as far as anyone can tell. But I still have yet to notice any drastic speed differences between various codec exports.
That said, I notice exports, in our studio, with un-rendered timelines, are actually faster than timelines that are rendered.
