Audio doesn't play on iPhone unless I use headphones

I am having this audio issue and I can't figure out how to fix it. I can send a video out of fcpx to youtube, vimeo or even export it to the desk top and sync it to an iPhone and the audio is messed up. Playback is fine on a computer, apple tv or iPad even, but on the iPhone it sounds like R2D2. It is however fine if I use headphones on the iPhone. It also only affects audio that was recorded into the camera (Canon 5d Markii) through a lav mic or shotgun mic. If I use the crummy built in mic on the camera it seems to be fine. Any music I add to the video also plays fine.

How are you exporting, exactly?
Are your project timelines stereo or surround sound?
