I have three versions of a documentary I'm working on (short, medium and long) all of which reference the same event.
Working from the timeline in FCPX if I go out to Photoshop to do some blemish removal on still images will those edits show up in the other two versions of my documentary?
I understand of course that any edits I make using inbuilt tools will be specific to that time line only.
Any advice appreciated.

Theoretically yes, but I've seen it not update for some things done in Photoshop.

All went well initially. I located the images I needed to edit in the events browser, did the "reveal in Finder" process to locate the original file, opened in photo shop, did the edits, returned to the timeline and there it was - a nice clean image.
Later however I noticed with JPEG files it wasn't giving me the usual "Save" dialogue. I didn't worry because the edits were still showing up in the timeline. However when it did give me a "Save" dialogue and I returned to the timeline I got the red "modified file" dialogue in the timeline and in the event browser.
Any thoughts what might be going on here?

Can't tell from that. Sounds as if the files were modified in some unexpected way. Did you try relinking it?
