i am currently use MBP 15" 2011 model, with 16gb ram and ssd drive + normal drive setup (removed my dvd drive).

I dont have any problem at all running FCPX but i LOVE the new retina display.

I cant afford for the 15" retina with 16GB , only for 13" model with 8 gb .

Is anyone use this model for FCPX editing (with several plugins) ?
Is the 8gb and intel 4000 capable of running FCPX smoothly ?

I also want to do motion projects , but not heavy compositing …

Changing a 2011 MBP as yours for a 13 inches Retina MBP is a big downgrade as everything in the Retina is less powerful, specially the CPU and GPU. You will also be limited by the amount of memory.

Even the screen will be a downgrade: even if it´s a Retina Display, it´s not as comfortable as a 15,4 inches: in video-editing more space to work is more productivity.

So for me, there´s absolutely no reason to change a 15 MBP for a 13 Retina MBP.

I too agree with MotionFX & his comments. Trying to run FCPX on a MBP with only 8 gigs of ram is a pain. Don't scrimp in this area. If you're feeling budget pressures, search for other areas in your life that can withstand the cuts, ram & processor need to be upheld.

Think positively, by continuing with FCPX you can make money. Don't downgrade to a point of inoperability. I'd exist on noodles for a month before giving up 8 gigs of ram.

I have a 2012 15" rMBP with a single SSD Thunderbolt drive. Editing native REDCODE RAW and serious heavy Motion work, it doesn't keep up with my 2008 MP running the HD 5870 GPU and media on internal secondary drives. Not at all.

The screen is beautiful, but way smaller and more of a PITA to stare at as opposed to my 2007 17" MBP. But it is an impressive laptop. I use it mostly for rough cuts in the field, and teaching around the country. Not for tons of serious work.

I debated ditching my MP and going with a large Pegasus RAID and my rMBP. But, as much Motion 5 work as I do, and working with some REDCODE RAW, along with the switch to the BlackMagic Cinema Camera or Red soon, I'm not giving up my tower any time soon.

Stick with what you have, for sure.
