since day one this kinda baffled me...

why are the fcpx folders in the users movie folder?

the movie folder for me is a place where i place my movies, clips and trailers. but projects/motion templates? no!

i wished apple would move that to documents or at least give us a preference to where it can be placed.

It really should be in a system folder, like Application Support/Plugins or some such so that all users on the system can access it.

To be honest I think it's a hangover from iMovie. Agree that there should be the option to store it somewhere else. Though I guess for the sake of installing plugins it would need to be consistent.

Usually when installing a plugin or effect, which saving in Motion basically is, there's an option to install for current user or all users. Would be nice if that option was in the Motion save dialogue as well I think.

The OS drive is not like secondary drives due to the ability of multiple users to access it under different log in names. Thus it is simply easy and convenient. It allows each user of a Mac to have their own private stuff without others logging in to see it. Since they have to go somewhere user specific, and we are working on editing video, the Movies folder makes sense to me.

I don't agree Ben, at least not completely.

For many things it would make way more sense (especially in a collaborative environment) to have templates available for all users.
As Tom said there should be the option where to save those templates.
It also makes sense the other way round. Means not to have trillions of demo plugins installed.

But you still can do it manually.
This requires not to use any newly created or installed template within any FCPX Event or FCPX Project.
Once you have created or installed a new one locate the template folder in Finder.
Then move it to: /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Templates/YourKindOfTemplateFolder/

YourKindOfTemplateFolder is either Effects, Generators, Titles or Transitions.

You also can move those you don't like, which screw up you lists and you never ever will use out of these folders.

Yep, for collaboration things should to into the Library folder somewhere. You would need consistency for that. Apple over simplified it, yes. But then, I don't really think about FCP X in terms of being a collaboration tool, yet. But yes, for collaboration, one central, standardized place all users can access.

I think the Final Cut Pro " documents" Events and Project shouldn't be located at all on the OS drive.
Having the option to save the Templates or having FCPX targeting a specific folder would be nice, and would be logical.
For the user folders like Movies, Music, Documents, etc... need to be changed or removed.

Especially since all the TV Shows, Movies, Apps from the iTunes Store are located in the Music folder.

I couldn't agree more, an effect, title etc may contain large media files that we know well are best kept off the OS drive, the option to get them elsewhere, for me, is a must.
