Weird Compound Clip Behavior

I have created a compound clip to use in several versions of a project. The clip contains audio all set to dual mono. If I expand (double click) the clip, all the audio somehow changes to surround. Collapsing the clip sets the audio back to its proper setting. Why would it be doing this? It makes it very hard to make audio edits on the clip as I'm now hearing all channels stereo/surround instead of mono. Breaking apart the clip items however resets everything back to it's proper, dual mono state. Is this a bug or am I missing something here? Thanks.
