Organising jobs in different projects

Hi

I've recently shot 'a year in the life of' Film for a company and I've started to edit the Footage.
The film breaks down into many different areas which I want to edit separately, then piece it together for the final edit.

Can/should I do this using multiple 'Projects' ?

and

can I merge the projects together for the final edit ?

I'm just trying to work out the best workflow,

Thanks

Neil

Most probably yes to the first would be a good way to do it; definitely yes to the second.

Definitely yes. The whole Project name is misleading and I wish Apple would drop it.

Every time I start a new project I create a folder and then put all my sequences (projects) in there.

You can also put folders inside folders so I'll often have a folder for assemblies, a folder for edits, a folder for old edits and a folder for the final masters all inside a master 'Project' folder.

FWIW Here the way it should be changed by Apple in the next update.

Creating a 'Project' creates a folder with (you guessed it) an empty sequence in it. ;)

How do you put the different projects/sequences together? Do you just copy everything inside, and past in the next (new projects/sequences)?

Another approach to this would be compound clips. Just create an empty compound clip with the sequence settings you want for each segment of the show. When your ready to assemble the final show create a project for it and drop the compound clips in. Also when I do this I create a smart collection just for compound clips. By doing this it's like having a sequence bin in the event.

To be honest I find that the organizational tools in FCPX are so powerful that every project I do I find ways that I could organize it better.

IS the folder created in the events Library ?

No, it is created in the Project Library.

Yes. Create a new 'Project' then simply got to your other sequences, select all, copy then paste into the new one. Be wary of Apple's new Compound Clip behavior though. Make sure that you select new parent media for them all.

Another thing I wish Apple would change. :(
