Hi, anyone using a Intensity Pro with ML and FCPX .6 or .7?

If so can you confirm that FCPX will only output audio through the OS system output
And therefore that the Intensity outputs all the system sounds, like audio from iTunes, Safari browser etc.

It seems there's no way around this.

Sorry it's late, and it's an odd problem.
Anyone else with this setup please chime in...

Cheers, Duncan.

My FCP X system can output audio through my KONA LHi card, and through my PreSonus FireStudio Project. You need to set it up in OS X's "System Preferences". FCP X doesn't have its own audio output assignment setting at this time. Although personally I don't find any issues with that so far. But it would be nice to have, so fill out the feedback page.

Hi Ben, thanks for your reply.
I will contact Apple because it's not a great situation, and (I hate to say it) not very professional. I've jut updated to .7 to see if it's changed... it hasn't.

I had thought that maybe it was a quirk of my Hackintosh, many people say they had trouble building a Hack, but mine went together first time never a single major issue. There are many tweaks that can be applied to tune the audio setup depending on your motherboard choice. But when I was running FCP6 it worked how I expected. So I never bothered to fiddle: www.duncancraig.co.uk/blazing-benchmarks/

With FCPX, the menu option 'A/V Output' selector only works with video, not audio... FCPX audio is permanently pushed through the system bus where's it's merged with everything else, iTunes, your browser, warning sounds, etc. Then as you say, in the preferences you have to patch the system outputs to your output device.

I want to output direct from FCPX to my broadcast card, and use the OS system audio for other things. In FCP 6 I'd often audition music under a timeline using iTunes and I could adjust the mix on an outboard mixer.

So, I have two main issues.

1. I can hear the processors buzzy whiny noise through the output bus when FCPX is crunching data. Just like the power management noise I used to get on my old Dual G5 PowerMac. In FCP6 because it handing it's audio off to the Intensity card, it sounds perfect on my Hackintosh. I wouldn't expect the output bus to be very clean. There will be dozens of processes running in the background that could inject signals into the bus? Is the main system bus 24bit 48kHz? Maybe this is a Hackintosh fault? But it's not there in FCP6.

2. If I'm viewing Quicktimes or checking my uploads on YouTube then the audio is out of sync. It's very late because it's been through the Intensity Card.

Lastly, If I was laying off to tape, I'd be really worried if some random OS sound effect ended up on the recording. If someone messaged me, or tweeted, or emailed and it ended up on the master tape... Personally my hackintosh only has work related apps on it, so that wouldn't happen, but you see what I'm saying.

Cheers, Duncan.

My KONA has no delays. If I'm in FCP, nothing else is running. And I've verified through both outputs and have no buzzy noise at all. But everyone has different hardware setups.

The A/V Output is for SDI output, which do carry the audio signal as well. You may want to look into that as an option.

Hiya!

For the record the AV output is not just for SDI cards, it switches the HDMI on/off from an Intensity Pro too.

While the Konas don't need a frame offset, my AJA IO and BM Intensity Pro (also BM Intensity Studio) need offsets too, lots of cards do.

Normally an offset makes no operational difference at all to an edit suite, as the software adjusts the canvas timing and user inputs to take account of the offset.

But FCPX forcing the audio output this way is a little irritating.

Also the CPU buzz is really really quiet, but it's there for me anyway.
Only when you press play on a mute timeline with your monitoring turned up full.

I'm from a broadcast background and was always spoilt with the best kit available, thesedays buying stuff with my own money means I'm looking to spend as little as possible. FCPX is great though.
