Even with the tutorials I've struggled to get my head around this so can you please confirm...

When importing files with new footage for new film you always...

Import into the events library but obviously as it's a new film (ie not connected to the last film/project) you creat a new event.

Then when you want to edit film you create a new project and drop the clis/edited of not onto the timeline.

Is that correct. I don't want to lose my last event/project that I worked on.

Sorry if this hopeless

Neil

I think I understand what you're asking. If you want us to be clear please proof read your question as this is a bit obscure.

Read through the FCP X manual and you will understand the workflow.

So. You import footage into an Event. You edit your footage into a Project. But projects are really just an instruction list. No actual footage is moved there from the Event.

Is that what you mean?

to add to what Seanus says, if you want to be sure you have all your media inside your event use the consolidate media option from the file menu. This is move any media that's required by the event in to the event folder if it's no there already.

Same for projects.

not necessarily … ;)

first of all: there's a Library, a pool of ALL stuff ever imported into FCPX. Using KEYWORDS in a smart way allows you to display those imports in many ways - not only by date or silly file-name ... no, you can apply your very own 'system', for instance protagonist' names, phrases, takes, angles, roles, ... and days:

'Events' is based upon the concept of 'dailies': the idea is, material done in one day is 'connected'.- But you can override this concept, by adding other days material to an existing Event!

to summarise:
Events is just one, one very rough option, to organise clips. think of FCPX as a database!
Apply as many tags as you like. and as you need. for instance, for my weekly soccer reports, I apply not only players names or 'favorit', but also a 'year in review'-tag - there are many funny 'out takes', I'll use in my 'Year in Review' ......

... and that 'pool' of data is untouched by the Projects! you can re-use, over and over again any frame from that pool of clips!

really: learn this app from point zero - and forget tracks, bins and folders :woohoo:

But by creating a project doesn't that meant you create a new timeline into which you drop your edited clips onto ? Otherwise aren't you left with dropping your clips onto the timeline of your last film, And if you delete this timeline you lose all your hard work from your last edited film.

I've subcribed with lynda.com and the chap on there say's (and I quote) "This first thing you do to edit your film after creating an event is to create a project"

I'm alittle confused

Neil
PS what do you mean by "you edit your film into a project" ?

A project consists of pointers to media inside your events plus instructions for adjusting the media to create the desired output. A project may include clips from multiple events. A project also contains your titles, transitions, and effects. Nothing you do inside a project modifies the original media.

Dropping a clip into a project does not add the actual media to the project. It adds a pointer to the clip to the project. This is why a project is small (a few megabytes in size) even though the referenced media can be quite large (many gigabytes in size). The same clip can be in multiple projects. Changes in one project do not effect the look of the clip in another project.

Now the experts can explain any errors I made in the above description and we will both learn something new. :cheer:

No - but I would recommend it for you. You invest in equipment & software - there's no reason not to invest in tutorials that help you work with that equipment and software. There's free advice out there, but you often get what you pay for. Here's a link to Ben's tutorial which I used. It was very helpful and will relieve you of at least some of your headaches:

www.macprovideo.com/tutorial/finalcutprox204-managing-media

It cost $19.50 - 21 videos, 60 minutes. That won't break anyone's bank.
