importing MPEG streaming files

Hi team,

FCP 10 won't let me import MPEG files into my events library.

Anybody know how to get over this problem.

I'm helping my kids out on a school project. They the shoot files on a normal VCR and when I click on them they open up the VLC media Player.

I promised them that I would edit images in FCP though.

Any help gratefully received

thanks

Neil

use (free) mpeg streamclip and export as a movie file (this will demux the source which I assume is mpeg2)

A pet peeve of mine, I wish people wouldn't use the generic term MPEG if they're referring to a specific codec or container.

Streaming MPEG? I had a job recently where the only surviving copy (camera record failed) was the server side H.264 .mp4 recording from a live stream. Imported into FCPX without any issue and, in fact, when looking at the media in the Event folder, FCPX didn't even wrap it to .mov.
H.264 mp4 Streaming files is certainly imported and supported directly in my experience.

A peeve of mine is when people say "convert it to a QuickTime Movie". What does that mean?
It could literally be anything from Cinepak to ProRes 4444

Amen to that.

Like someone would walk into a restaurant or diner, "I'd like to order Sandwich for lunch."

Any thoughts on best settings for FCP X? I have a number of MPEG-2 videos; QT Player says they are 720 x 480 (872 x 480), AC3, 48000 Hz, 29.97 fps with a data rate of 9.55 Mbit/s.

So I should use Export to QuickTime, but what compression format? Apple ProRes alone has four choices: 4444, 422 or 422 (HQ), (Proxy) or (LT). And there are many more options.

Default quality is 50% - this is just sports highlights, so probably good enough but I can play with that.

Frame Size: Scale to 16:9 or leave unscaled? I might assume to use the same as any other clips in the project?

Thanks!

So the file is Standard Def Anamorphic which is 16:8.8 (not quite 16:9) which is why you're getting 872x480 instead of 854x480 (or 853x480).

The specific version of ProRes may depend on what else you're importing into the Project. You might chose ProResLT or ProRes422 as I'm not sure how much benefit HQ will give you. Given the source is 16:8.8 you might get slight black boarders in a 16:9 Project. I haven't mixed the two Aspect Ratios in FCPX yet. FCXP can resize it slightly though. You might want to do a quick test, encoding just a minute or so vs scaled to 16:9 Square Pixels.
