Help! Play button will not work!!!

Very Strange!

Using FCP X 10.0.7 with my 15 inch MacBook Pro (Retina Display).

I can't get the play button to work on the Event clips. However ... when I load the clip into the project the play button works. This means I can't preview a clip until I drop it into the timeline/project. Scrubbing does work on the event side ... but hitting the play button / space bar / or using the menu to play does nothing.

I have tossed out the pref files from the user library ... no help. I've deleted FCP X and re-installed .... no help. I have it running on a second laptop ... and it works fine there.

Any Help?

Thanks!

If you are in list mode for the Browser, there's a catch I find a PITA. You have to first click on the actual filmstrip to playback. You can't just click on the clip in the list and play. Could that be it?

That's weird Ben, no problems like that here. I can put my clips into list view, hit play and click any clip in the list or arrow up/down through the list with no interruption to playback at all.

Mikvogel, do JKL work as expected in the Event Browser?

Jimmy,

No... unfortunately they won't either.

It's weird. I'll hit the space bar or K and I'll see the view menu tab blink, but it won't play.

We've tried re-installing FCPX, trashing prefs... all sorts of things we can think of...

OK...

We think we have this licked...

Editor-friend in town suggested that we do steps 3-6 of the removal of FCPX from the instructions below and then re-start FCPX. It's essentially trashing prefs, but goes a little deeper.

Once we re-started FCPX, things were working correctly.

Thanks for everyone's time and feedback.

Steps for removing FCPX (Only did Steps 3-6)

Removing Final Cut Pro X
Follow the steps below for the version of Mac OS X that you are using.

OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

In Finder, choose Applications from the Go menu.
Locate the Final Cut Pro application and drag it to the Trash.
In Finder, hold down the Option key and choose Library from the Go menu.
In the Library folder that opens, open the Application Support folder. Move the Final Cut Pro folder and the Apple Qmaster folder to the Trash.
Return to the Library folder and open the Caches folder. Move the "com.apple.FinalCut" folder to the Trash.
Return to the Library folder and open the Preferences folder. Move the following files to the Trash:

com.apple.FinalCut.LSSharedFileList.plist
com.apple.FinalCut.LSSharedFileList.plist.lockfile
com.apple.FinalCut.plist
com.apple.FinalCut.plist.lockfile

Note: The .lockfile items may not be present on your system.

Free app called "Preference Manager" from Digital Rebellion (dot com) trashes preferences for you safely, easily, very fast.

Having the same issue. Even tried the preference manager and nothing worked.

Everytime I select a clip in the library and hit space bar nothing happens. Even when I go over to the viewer and hit play. Nothing.

I have to drag it into the timeline in order to view it.

Trashing preferences, etc. worked for me too (steps 3-6 above).
Was really frustrated. Super helpful, thanks!
(p.s. working in OS 10.9.2 with FCPx 10.1.1)
