how to get YpbPr video into my Power Mac G5 & FCP 5.1 was created by mraroid
Hi folks....
I am running a Power Mac G5 with dual 2.0Ghz processors (no laughing please!!). I have installed solid state drives and I am running the fastest video card I could find. I have installed the max amount of RAM that this Motorola will take which is 8GB. This is the machine:
www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_...mac_g5_2.0_dp_2.html
The most current version of FCP I can run on this Power Mac is FCP 5.1 (also called Final Cut Studio 5.1). The newest OS I can run is Leopard.
I would like to push video into my Mac using a HDMI to DVI adapter. I want to stick it onto one of the two DVI ports on my video card and see if I can stream video into my Mac this way.
In an ideal world, I would like a PCI-X card that I can install in my Mac that will give me a HDMI input.
I have no idea if that will work. If it does work, can I stream my HDMI content directly into FCP 5.1 using my video card with a HDMI to DVI adapter?
I restore motion picture film. I clean and lube the film, then run it in a machine called a telecine machine. The output of the telecine machine is YpbPr. I am trying to figure out how to stream this Component video into FCP 5.1
I am open to any and all suggestions.
Sorry about the old equipment. I am new to FCP but I bought it with all the books.
Any help appreciated.
Thank you.

No this will not work. Your only hope of getting digital into your G5 (which is IBM not Motorola) is to buy a capture card. Even then a G5 is going to have a terrible time with any video other than SD.
If I were you I'd strip the thing for parts and sell it all off on ebay in the hope of raising enough captial to buy an iMac or even a Mac Mini.

Hi... Thanks for your help. As it stands now, I can not afford another Mac. I have been unable to find any capture cards. Do you have some suggestions on where to look, or maybe a card you can suggest to me?
I appreciate your help and advice.

When someone sends me HD on a portable hard drive (1080p Apple Pro Res 422 HQ) I have no issues. So I am just trying to figure out how to get my YpbPr into the Mac.

Really!? Wow I did a little bit of HD work with my old G5 in 2007 but it was super painful.
I would suggest looking for an old Decklink Card (HD Pro?) on Ebay. PCI X slot I think it was?
Maybe got to www.decklink.com and visit the forums there for an answer.
Also AJA made cards for the G5, as well as the Firewire break out box, the name of which escapes me right now.
