Hello
I am interested in finding out what people are using as their main editing monitor. I am looking to upgrade my setup to a single 27 inch from the dual setup i'm currently running. I have been looking at the offerings that Apple, Dell and Samsung have but am open to anything out there. An IPS panel seems to be the way to go, so there are options outside of the three already mentioned.
The obvious need is a panel that is clearly representative of color space.....etc.
My top price is set at $900 (refurbished mac is around $850-ish). Though i am open to a lower price range if the Monitor is up to scratch, I notice that ASUS offers an IPS panel for under $400????!! at Newegg.
Thanks for your help on this.
regards
Krzysztof

Check this out.
Same Display as 27" iMac
But why would you want to get rid of your second monitor? I love just having a whole wall of all my clips to look at while editing. I just can't do it with one monitor after I've gotten used to two.

Hello Julian
Thanks for the link i'll look into that. Re; to two vs one monitor question, running older monitors with questionable color space/gamma...etc. I'll continue to use them for utility type functions (audio/video scopes), but i need a truer colour monitor for my main view. Also, i tend to like to run a long timeline view (right now stretching across the tow monitors) and a 27 inch will allow that with real estate to spare.

Computer monitors are not broadcast monitors. How close you can come is very subjective. No single monitor comes closer to being a broadcast monitor than another.

Hello Ben
Yes indeed, i'm not expecting a $900 monitor to equal a broadcast monitor. Am i to understand that if i purchase a $199 Benq or ASUS that i would receive the same benefit with regards to colour space/gamma..etc as i would with a $900 IPS Monitor?

What specific color space/gamma curve are you looking for? Point is, this is a very debatable issue, there are no absolutes. Photographers who print out photos for delivery have different needs than videographers who are going to TV sets.
Just do your homework, and be aware there is no one single absolute best.
Even an IPS has its drawbacks.
But you're on the right track, doing homework. What is your budget?
I currently use an old Apple 30" Cinema Display, along with a FSI LM2453W broadcast monitor. But I'm moving to a 27" Thunderbolt display soon, replacing the 30", as it is more clear for me to read text and detail on. But as for color space and gamma, software has as much to do with that as hardware. Do a lot of homework. Is there a ColorSync profile for a particular monitor? That will help with FCP X more. But it won't help with AE.
There's big gray areas, that's all. Homework, lots of it, and that's why you're here. Good to see that. I know so many folks who spent good money on hardware based on what some blogger said, only to find out it doesn't work well with their other hardware/software. Homework, can't do too much of it.
