The App Store not having a paid upgrade ability is BS!
Every OSX is a paid upgrade. 10.1 will most likely be paid upgrade if, even sooner.
Until then we will see some major changes from Avid and Adobe.

Since there is no option for 'full' or 'upgrade' at 'different prices', everything is, by definition either a 'free' upgrade or a 'paid full purchase'.

Some software (Quicken) is priced that you pay the full freight for every version upgrade (maintenance upgrades are free) and Adobe has priced CS Cloud such that you're paying for a new license after about 3 years, which is sort of what it would be if you did three yearly upgrades.

Now that software is not shrink-wrapped and shipped, what defines an update and what's a new version is more amorphous and the costs associated with upgrading are less onerous.

My guess is that Apple sowed enough ill-will with their disastrous introduction technique of FCPX (they should have called it beta for about 3 months) that they won't be asking for an upgrade or version purchase for quite a while.

Some may disagree, but I don't think Apple is beholden to put this back in FCPX for free. FCSv functionality was never part of the Studio suite, but always a specialized purchase for big facilities. If Apple was to add in that functionality as an paid add-on, or as part of a paid upgrade, I think that's fair game.

That said, they might add it in for free... I just don't think I'm OWED it.

I think the distinction is between "Paid Upgrade", and "Upgrade Pricing". Right now appStore has no upgrade pricing option if Apple wanted to release an update for FCPX and charge... say... $99 to existing users vs $299 regular price.

Avid and Adobe will surely be there at NAB in April with new stuff. I think Apple will have some announcements as well.

Yes I can see it being a separate purchase. If they build it into FCPX I'm not sure if that would be the trigger for another FCPX upgrade purchase. The market for FCSv is a small subset of the entire FCPX user base.

On the other hand if Apple wants to sell the MacPro replacement to facilities, including FCSv build into FCPX might be a very strong incentive to move systems... all the more reason not to charge for the feature.

I have to say I don't think Apple owes us anything. They made some software; they offered it for a price, and we bought it.

The whole thing about making it parity with 7 is bogus I think. Apple made legacy FCP for years, sold it at a good price, and we all earned money off it, or so I hope. (If I bought the suite for the first time three months before NAB 2011 I might be a pissed.)

Then Apple stopped development and stopped making 7. They didn't take anything from us. They had no obligation to continue working on it. We can be sorry about it, but it's not our decision to make and again, they have no obligation to us to continue development, just as a car manufacturer might discontinue a line of vehicles that we really like and have owned for years. They might handle the announcement better, as certainly the prelude to that NAB was complete bollocks in the way it was done, a marketing and PR catastrophe, but that's neither here nor there.

They decided to make different software. We didn't have to buy X, but we bought it for what it is. They don't have to make it like 7 or make it do half the things 7 does (though in my view it does a great deal that 7 can't do and does it more elegantly and makes the process more enjoyable). This is different software, and they can distribute it any way they feel the market and their customers will support.

As I said, frankly I'm surprised 10.0.6 wasn't 10.1 and wasn't offered at an upgrade price. At some point they're going to have to recoup their development costs. Just selling the toggle that's the computer isn't going to be enough, unless it can be shown statiscally that the machine sold was sold directly because of FCPX. Not sure if that's possible, but it would be crucial data.

Thankfully the list is getting shorter.

Big ones for me are collaborative workflows. Even if its just made to be as easy as it was in FCP 7.

Customizable interface. I still struggle with FCP X, especially the timeline which just isn't flexible enough for me. But not being able to save layouts for different keyword collections is very annoying.

Better trimming Trimming in FCP X is still way behind FCP classic which itself was way behind AVID.

Better media management. Not being able to archive projects with handles is a big loss for me.

Round tripping with Motion. I'm hoping Motion X will fix this.

Output for audio mixing just about every job I do is mixed somewhere else.
Hopefully Logic X will solve this.

There are more but those are the main ones. I still love FCP X and admire Apple for taking the bold decision that they took. Will I pay another $299 for more features? Probably but I can't say I'd be too happy about it. If they come up with a way to have a paid upgrade. No problem.
