How to simulate color blindness? was created by mamrotu73
I have footage from my dog's perspective and I want to differentiate it by simulating red/green color blindness. Any tips on how to achieve this effect? Thanks!

Reduce the amount of red and green channel data? I wish it were that easy. It is actually not an easy thing to mimic in video. You need to desaturated the red and green data to some extent, one more than the other depending on the type of color perception deficiency.

Well you could color correct for it to be technically accurate, or you could color correct for theatricality.
Are dogs red/green colorblind? I'm red green colorblind and the main issue I have is distinguishing the transitions from red to pink and blue to purple. I'm not sure how you would translate that to your footage though. One example that came to my mind is that old episode of the Simpsons where Bart is trying to train santa's little helper and they cut to the dogs perspective and all he hears is blah blah blah sit... Etc.

How ever you do it, it will require something higher end like DaVinci Resolve, and a very thorough knowledge of color and grading techniques. Wiki has some good examples.

Yep, dogs are red/green color blind. I think I'll just go with the theatrical edit and hope most people who see it won't be all that educated on the specifics of dog vision. It will get the point across of differentiating the different viewpoints still.

Technically, no, dogs are not color deficient (color blind is an old, inaccurate term) the way humans are, not at all. Their color perception is a bit more complex than that.

But most folks think dogs see in black and white, so any sort of channel specific desaturation and selective color work would fool an audience.

Yeah, it's really just about conveying the message. I think it will come down to how much the camera feels like a dogs perspective. Just getting that ADHD camera movement all over the place from a really low angle will do 99% of the job, the rest is just the icing.

Hey, what about some selective desaturation, with a very slight, totally desaturated, slightly darker vignette around the frame edges?
