Importing Multitrack audio from protools

I've looked all over the place and even through macprovideo.com and I haven't been able to find a simple answer.

We are just about finished with the short we shot last summer. The audio has been mixed in protools and I received a single stereo track of audio. After watching the short a few times, there are some small changes we want to make.

I'm not sure of the best way to make these changes, but here's what I want to attempt.

I want the audio engineer to export a multitrack audio file that I can open in FCPX (what would this be?). Once I have the multitrack audio synced up I want to match some of the cuts to the audio and I want to shorten some scenes just a little bit. Then I will export the audio through XtoPro so the engineer can fix the room tone etc. for the final mix.

Will it be as simple as him exporting a multitrack file that I can open up in FCPX, or will there be issues?

I've just had a ton of workflow issues with this project (because I don't know what I'm doing yet) and I want to learn the best way to do these things so it's easier next time.

Thanks.

Just have him export stereo aif or wav stems (DIA, MX, FX, VO... whatever) with 2 pops. Sync them up, cut what you need and/or add any audio you need to clean the edits (room tone, fx, additional or recut MX) and give them back. They'll only need to remix the bits you've cut. If you're delivering a finished product straight from FCP X and it's already mixed, and if you can do the cuts cleanly, you may not even need to give it back to him unless you want to.

Can't sleep? Try this: fcpxpert.net ;-)

Yeah, that's the way I was going to do it, but I just wanted to know if there was a way to go back and forth while keeping all the tracks separate. Not so much for this project, but for future reference I just want to know the workflow that leaves all future changes open.

Maybe we show this to people and decide to change things, it would be nice to be able to keep the tracks separate just in case.

Really your best bet is to make the ProTools session the absolute end of the process thus avoiding expensive remixes.

We always wait until we have complete sign off before we go to the final, mix.

Same goes for the grade.

Your only hope is to get the audio engineer to export the stems to separate aif or wav files.

In most studios I work with, the audio mixer sends by Stems. It can make minor changes much easier for the video editor to make.

Thanks Ben, that's what I'm looking for. If I tell my audio guy to just give me stems from protools that sounds like it will work the best.
