game plan for sharing work between 2 computers

game plan for sharing work between 2 computers was created by parkerhqj
I’ve had all sorts of problems - many of them self-inflicted - sharing my work with another editor using fcpx. So I’ll outline what I now consider to be my best workflow. I would appreciate any feedback. I know a lot of us are struggling with this, so maybe it’s a good exercise to think this out loud. Here’s what I’ve come up with to have the same job shared on two different hard drives coming off two different computers:
1) Create an event and import all interviews, b-roll, pictures, other graphics, music, etc. onto Edit Drive A coming off Computer A.
2) Make sure all your effects match on both computers. If you have customized effects in your effects folder on Computer A (in my case various moves on stills), you will have to manually copy those from the Movies folder on Computer A to Computer B - they will not follow the Event or Project files when they are copied to the edit drives.
3) Log interviews, create keywords, make favorite clips, etc. (this all happens in the event browser).
4) Copy that event onto Edit Drive B which is coming off Computer B.
You now have the same event with all that you need for your initial edit on both edit drives.
5) Create a project on Edit Drive A. Copy that project to Edit Drive B.
6) Begin your edit on Edit Drive A. Bring down your selects, add stills, animate them, add music, etc.
You will probably be making changes in your event as well as your project as you go, so you will probably have to copy the event file as well as the project file from time to time as you move forward. In my case, I often animate stills using compound clips which wind up in the browser - part of the event. That means my changes affect both the project and the event. To share those changes (assuming you made changes in the both the project and event):
7) Quit fcpx on both computers.
Go to the event folder on Edit Drive A, copy your CurrentVersion.fcpevent file.
9) Paste it to the same event folder on Edit Drive B. You can also send it via e-mail or use DropBox or whatever you prefer. You will be prompted about whether to replace the other event file on Edit Drive B and you will say yes. Be careful as the files all say the same thing and you need to be mindful of the folder it is coming from and going to!
10) Go to the project folder on Edit Drive A, copy your CurrentVersion.fcpproject file.
11) Paste it to the same project folder on Edit Drive B.
12) Open the new event on Edit Drive B. Open the new project on Edit Drive B.
It should show the changes made in both the event and the project.
You should be able to pass those files back and forth over the course of the edit. If at any time you add new media to the event on either edit drive, you will need to import those same files into the event on the other edit drive. DropBox works great for this for stills, but any substantial video footage would have to be imported from a drive. The same is true for any customized effects. It's easy to forget (for me anyway) that your customized effects reside on your boot drive and not your edit drive.
You can also copy projects inside fcpx if your edit drives are connected to the same computer, but I'm assuming that that isn't an option in this scenario. Also, if you have only made changes in the event metadata, there's no sense in copying over all the media again. There is no option to just copy the metadata within fcpx at present.
I don't know how coherent this all is and I welcome any corrections. thx
