A client called and wanted to change few credits in credit roll on a documentary we finished in March. The project was finished with FCP X 0.3.
I have numerous project backups but every one of them make version .7 crash at startup. The project has quite a few compound clips in it and I assume thats the reason for the crash.
I have .5 on my other station, but that also crashes upon starting the project.
Any ideas?

Any chance you have a copy of 10.0.3 on a backup somewhere?

Your best option would be too find a 10.0.3 version and 10.0.4.
Break down those compound clips in .0.3 and then update to each version of FCP X.
Compound clips and extra story lines seem to a bag of hurt, only use them if you absolutely need to.

I always keep backup master files with and without titles, so it was an easy task to redo the credit roll. I also was able to open the project with FCP X .3 backup from the Time Machine.
Just for the fun of it I have now FCP X versions .0, .1, .2, .3, .5, .6 neatly zipped and backed up.
I'm still searching for .4 version since .5 (or .6 nor .7) wont open the .3 project, even with the compounds broken apart.
Happy New Year to everyone!

Having read this, I just made a folder called "XML BACKUPS". I'm placing an XML export of all my important projects in there. Just in case. This way there's no render files, databases, relinking or anything to get in the way of a "recovery".
Yeah, Apple even has a KB doc about upgrading that states you zip up or copy the older version of FCP X somewhere, before upgrading. HHmmm...

Since my last post was gone 'cause of the hacking here it is again:
An update to my problem:
I was able to pinpoint the problem to one audio SFX file, which had an Final Cut's Echo Delay effect in it. It opened fine in 0.4 but crashed 0.5. Once I removed the delay effect the project opened straight in 0.7. So it was an audio problem all along and something happened between 0.4 and 0.5 in regards handling that effect but all is fine now.

Yeah, I had posted after you fixed it, too. First, glad you got it fixed. Second, I'd never touch anything in the FCP category of audio filers, I always use the Logic filters. Way better quality, more stable.

Very worrying. So I guess the answer is to make sure all your projects get upgraded when an update comes out?

I just came on-board a project with only rough edits and basic audio work done in 10.0.2. I took those Events and Projects directly into 10.0.7 with no issues at all. Then again, they only used the stock templates and Logic audio filters. For an hour and a half feature, no issues, I was pretty impressed.
