FCPX working too slow, hanging and crashing

Hi, I'm running FCPX 10.0.6 on a macbook pro 13" 2,8 processor with 16 gigas of ram memory, and I have all of my projects and events in a SSD connected via usb but it becomes very slow even performing very simple tasks and sometimes it hangs or crashes making very difficult to work.
I would like to ask for any advice or orientation about this situation because I consider that I have enough power on my machine but I can work properly

Any help will be much appreciated

Thanks!

USB2 is not very quick. Make sure the SSD enclosure is USB3 or Thunderbolt of FireWire800 capable. USB2 is not suitable for use with video applications. This can be one source of the problem, but not the only one.

Thank You Tom, i know usb2 is not the best option but it is what I have at the moment, anyway, my concern also has to do with the fact that when I first started using fcpx it was version 10.0.3 or 10.0.5 and it seemed to me that working was much easier and flowless and at that time I had only half the ram memory that I have now, so I suspect that is not only the usb2 port the reason that is making may working with FCPX such a tedious task sometimes

Once again THANK YOU TOM! and any other thought about this issue will be of great help

Try the usual, trash prefs, repair permissions, and try a new admin user.

Sorry for my ignorance but I knew the thrash prefs trick but I don't know about repairing permissions or working with a new user...

Once again THANKS TOM!

Repair permission in the Disk Utility. Make a new user in System Preferences>Users.

just from the very other end of 'users' (hobbyist, no-budget-equip.):

usb2 works like charm here - esp. when using proxies, my antique c2d 2.26/8GB MacMini handles even Multicam flawless.

ok: almost flawless. ;)

my set-up offers 60GB free on internal drive, Projects on internal, Events on a cheap WD 2TB usb2 drive - my simple game-reports (4 diff. sources, lil' effects/few 2nd story lines, lil' color corrections, slowmo) fly.-

soooo - a 'clean' set-up, no nasty symLink-tricks, no Skype while editing, no exotic codecs = all fine.

not professional, but … fine. B)

Thanks Karsten, I can't figure out what's wrong with my set up, I guess I'm gonna keep asking and looking for someway to fix it

Thanks again Karsten!

the problem is: from remote. people on other boards post endless lists of their hardware specs, but 'forget' to mention, they tweaked the set-up with .... say, weird 'tricks', starting with de-installation of 'not needed' OS-parts, virus scanners, symLinking etc etc etc.

No personal offence meant!!

mostly, it is habitual - a friend used Macs for 5y years, never knowing, there's an OFF command under the Apple. He just pressed the power-switch 'long enough.-

another friend habitually makes a 'clean install' with any new Mac he gets. out-of-the-box. and, for sure, selects 'custom install' ...., and the drama begins ......

I'm too dumb for any 'optimizing', I do use as Cupertino wants me to do - and happy, my 339,99€ set-up works.

somehow.- :silly:

USB 2 really isn't good for video. I think you need to figure out first of all is whether its your computer or your external drive.

Can you copy a project to your internal drive and see if things improve?
If not just create a new event and project on your local drive, bring in a few clips and see how things go.

What is the footage you are working with? Could it be that after upgrading FCP X is now transcoding in the background? Is the drive at the same capacity as it was before or have you filled it up since then?

Tom, question. Why make a new user?

These seems to help in some instances where there are conflicts with other software. Basically it creates a reset condition where everything, including the OS and the apps, is in the default state.

Ah, I misread. I thought you meant he should make a new user before running Disk Utility. But yes, you're correct, a new user can help with troubleshooting a great deal.
