Record Audio - latency was created by sirdavidabraham
Has anyone tried to Record Audio in FCPX for dialog replacement? On my system it always places the audio clip much later than the talent recorded it, so I have to manually drag it in place. Weirdness

I do voice work daily and it works fine for me. What is your audio hardware setup?

I'm going directly into the Audio Line/In via a Mackie Mixer. I do this regularly with Logic Pro without issues.

Ah, Logic Pro is a very, very different animal.
What Mac are you using?
Are you recording to the OS drive or an external drive (if ext what connection type)?
Side note, just a thought, you don't get really great bit rates or sample rates using the built in audio ports on a Mac. You may want to seriously looking at a more professional quality audio interface for your Mac.

it's a 4 Terabyte WD digital RAID drive connected via Firewire. (iMac Late 2009)
I've done the whole Digidesign/Avalon Preamp/Neuman TLM 103 thing in a past life.
Now I'm more of a serious hobbyist and prefer the simplicity of just going direct into the iMac Line In...the sound quality is adequate for my purposes at this stage. If I get really good at films possibly my mind will change

I can't duplicate this, BUT I have seen it mentioned once or twice on other forums. I think it could be a bug. Be sure to report it via the Feedback page (File menu).

Sir David
Not sure if you found your answer, but audio latency can be a problem in rerecording/ADR/VO work. As far as I know FCPX does not provide for easy latency compensation. This is not a "bug" but just a hardware/software fact of life and lack of feature. Almost all recording software provides for compensation control e.g. ProTools, Logic Pro(poorly implemented), Soundtrack Pro, Ableton Live,.... Since you have used Logic Pro in the past, you probably set up compensation and then forgot about it.
Your sound input chain, Mic>cable>Mic preAmp>Mackie mixer>effects>Analogue/Digital converter>output card(USB/Firewire,FiberOptic) or direct analogue out to mic in on your iMac then the internal audio processing on the iMac>conversion to audio format(codec) and finally any effects and inserting into FCPX will produce some latency. Should be amazed that it is generally limited to a few milliseconds.
Despite the vast improvements to FCPX audio, I miss the round-tripping allowed under FCP7 to Soundtrack Pro and back. Apple is rumored to be working on new LogicProX so hope it has easy links/integration with FCPX. If not I hope that Apple will keep adding more improvement to the audio part of FCPX like latency compensation, better waveform editing i.e. zero crossing insert audio, multi-track recording, mixing board (Virtual or real) integration etc.... Don't want much do I?
While there are some work arounds, manually aligning audio placement may be the best and easiest current method.
You might try to eliminate the Mackie if you don't need it and go with a nice USB mic or even just an analogue 1/8 (3.5mm) mic directly into the iMac and see if your latency goes down to acceptable levels. Otherwise you can export the audio channels, record new multi-channels in a different program and fix the latency issue and then reimport all the channels back into project. It should then be properly lined up due to the original sound, mute the original tracks and use then VO/ADR new channels.
Have done lots of sound recording work in the past and latency compensation is just part of setting up the recording equipment.
Hope this helps, Happy New Year
Greg

You actually shouldn't have any latency at all with audio in FCP X. It is not the same as Logic.
Do you have any latency playing pack video with audio in your web browser or playing video in QT Player?
