Is zooming necessary?

Me again...

Have just learned the basic of key framing in still images, and I can see that this also can be used with video clip.

If you´re not zooming a lot, isn it sufficient to use key framing? Taken that the pixels of the clip is high enough.

Where is the limit? How much pixels must it be if you want to zoom in, let say 88mm(in reference to 35mm).(this is what I´m hoping to find out :)

My camera is not good. It´s a handycam with some easy form of image stabilization. When I´m zooming(or walking/running closer to the object) the image becomes unstable(using the stabilization in FCPX only making the images smaller).

So I´m thinking to put the camera on a stand, and just use key framing.

My project budget is low(!) so I´m doing this alone and with non trained kids :)

and me gain too:
video has a 'fix' resolution.

if you like to re-frame a picture, things very soon start to get ugly.

a simple trick is to record in 1080, but work in a 720 project: you can zoom a 150% and get still a 'native' resolution.

keep in mind: video is, esp. from consumer cams highly compressed; if it's called '1080', it does not store 1080 pixels; and the colour resolution is in most cases just a quarter of pixel resolution.

so, you zoom into a 'calculated, estimated' picture.
depends much of each recording.
a low-light, noisy recording looks cheap even in its original 100% :silly:

I've edited a few multi cam shoots that were shot with a single camera operator. A couple of cameras strategically positioned and set to roll with 1 floating.

In these cases I always suggested that they shoot at 1080p for 720p output allowing for reframing.

I don't tend to keyframe zooms, they look really obvious. In the real word tracking a camera shows the perspective shift and zooming, on camera, just scales the framing of the image. In theory key-framing a zoom should imitate the camera zoom, but it doesn't really look the same.

When I first went to college the lecturers drummed into our heads that the zoom control on a camera is a framing tool, with the zoom lens being an adjustable set of prime lenses.
