Topic says it all! I'm trying to shane the sped of a clip to 97%, but this shunts the following clips along the timeline - how do I 'lock' the following clips?

If you promote the clip you want to speed up to be a connected clip, changing its length won't move following clips on the timeline.

Press Command-Option-Up arrow to turn the clip into a clip connected to a gap clip (you can also use the 'Lift from Storyline' command from the Edit menu). If you then speed up the connected clip, a few frames of the gap clip will become visible before the next clip appears. To prevent the gap appearing, extend the connected clip. If you slow the connected clip down, it will extend over the first frames of the following clip.

To bring the retimed clip down to the main timeline, press Command-Option-Down arrow or choose 'Overwrite to Primary Storyline' from the Edit menu.

Thanks very much, all goes well until I try to bring it back down - it jumps to another storyline below the main one.

I make it into a connected clip, then I dragged the retime button until it's 96% speed. This makes it longer, so I then trim it back with snap enabled to it's original clip length. Then I try to overwrite to primary storyline and it doesn't work.

Any further tips?

ok got it in there by dragging it into the main storyline, which shunted everything along, I then deleted the gap clip and everything shits back into place

The 'Overwrite to Primary Storyline' command always moves a selected clip down to the main storyline - not to the storyline that is directly below the connected clip.

What you refer to as your main storyline was a connected storyline. 'There can only be one' main (or primary) storyline.

As you used the 'Lift from Storyline' command on a clip on a secondary storyline, it replaced the clip with a gap clip before creating the connected clip.
