metadata issue

I've just received a bunch of pictures that were an I-photo exported folder on a CD. My client had put a description of each photo underneath the file name. I can see that when I read it off the CD in I-photo. Then I imported the pictures into FCPX and the description wasn't there. I also noticed that when I imported the photos into I-photo, the descriptions didn't follow there either. I'm wondering why they would give you the option of adding metadata that you can't export. Now I have to manually relabel the pictures. Is there a way around this? thx
