Problem with Compound Clips of Multi-Cam Clips was created by PaulMarcel
So I don't do extraordinarily complicated videos like many of you likely do, but one thing that has always worked seems to be pretty broken in 10.0.6. I'm wondering what the new way is.
The background is that I do a woodworking podcast so I tend to have two cameras: main and tool. I import these and sync them in a multicam clip. I normally then create a compound clip with the multicam clip, open the CC and put another copy of the multicam as a connected clip. At this point, my compound clip has a primary clip and connected clip (at 0:00) that are the same multicam clip. I then change the camera angle on the primary clip to be the tool cam. So... connected clip is main cam angle, primary clip is tool cam angle.
The reason I do this will be apparent in a bit...
In use, I put the compound clip in my timeline and edit away. When I want to do a picture in picture or side-by-side or whatever to show both angles at the same time, I used to (pre-10.0.6) cut both ends of where I want the PIP and ungroup. I apply a PIP template I made in Motion to the connected clip that was ungrouped. It zooms the clip it is applied to up to the top-right corner thus revealing the tool cam full screen behind it.
The reason I load the compound clip with the same multicam clip twice is: a) both cameras are synced for me, b) it allows me (<10.0.6) to change the angles of the connected/primary clip in case I want the tool cam in the PIP box.
This has worked well for me for awhile. I'm no pro
Now, in 10.0.6, it seems really broken. I take the compound clip, chop it up, decide I want a PIP effect somewhere so I ungroup. As soon as I ungroup, I get the primary and connected clips that are within the compound clip... but instead of starting at, say, timecode 2:15 of the compound clip like it did before ungrouping, it now starts at 0:00. Completely worthless to me.
Note that this happens before applying any effect.
I have tried the new "Make new parent" command in hopes it would somehow detach it from the bug, but it persists. No work-around I have come up with works. Googling how to downgrade to 10.0.5 have also shown only useless banter. I have Time Machine, but backing off to 10.0.5 then re-importing all this footage is daunting.
Any ideas? is there a more correct way to do what I'm doing that actually works in 10.0.6?
Suggestions very much appreciated, thanks... looking forward to 10.0.7

I don't understand why you're grouping them into a Compound Clip. What is the purpose of that? Why not just put each Multicam Clip in a project, one in The storyline, one connected. This seems like a very complicated way to so something really simple.
Make the Connected multiclip small and PIP throughout. Keyframe opacity where you need it to show and not show. Very fast, very easy.

Here's a video I edited in 10.0.5. It'll start a second or two before the effect and will zoom back out soon after:
The reason I'm doing the Compound Clip is simply to make editing easier... cuts cut both clips keeping them in sync. The reason I can't do the simple opacity change you suggest is because the PIP effect includes a build-in/build-out zooming effect. The connected clip (main cam) goes from full-screen zooming down to a PIP revealing the tool cam underneath. The opacity change would instead mean the tool cam would always be the small PIP and simply fade in.
Again the only reason the two clips inside the compound clip are multi-cam clips is because occasionally I want to swap the roles of the tool cam/main cam. Prior to 10.0.6, I could just ungroup, switch the angles on the clips (so now the tool zooms up to PIP) quickly and easily.
Overall this workflow has been really easy to setup and fast to edit. What I'm stuck on is getting that same look. There's no reason for 10.0.6 to reset the time range to 0:00 in the clips after ungrouping; it never did that before.
Is there a better way to accomplish what you see in the clip?
Thanks for the suggestions; appreciated!

Follow up with bug description and workaround:
The YouTube link I posted shows the effect I use and the reason the keyframed opacity changes don't really do what I want. Although I like that technique and plan on trying that out where applicable (so thanks!)
I played with it more (and augmented my vocabulary considerably) and found that if I build the clip as explained, retime it to something other than 100%, then cut out a piece for the effect, the ungroup will restart the ungrouped clips at 0:00 of their respective sources.
Obviously (yet another) bug but one I can work around knowing the cause. For now, I retime the cut part where I want the effect back to 100%, ungroup, retime the two ungrouped clips back to whatever I had them at before then apply the effect (which is a Motion 5 template).
