DVD Copy Protection

I have a potential client that I know in the past has taken someone else's dvd and asked if his business information could be edited out of it so that she could use the rest of the video for a different event. She is a member of my church and I believe she is trying to get me to do a trailer for one of her stage plays that my church happens to be doing as part of revival. But I think that she is trying to get me to do the trailer under the guise of it being a church event but she will use it later for when she does a separate production of the play. Is there any way that I can copy protect the dvd? I found a small number of references to copy protection software but they were all for Windows computers. What are you all doing to copy protect your dvds?

Copy protection for DVDs can only be done by a replication/duplication facility and involves purchasing licenses, thus expensive. No DVD copy protection for DVDs you burn yourself.

You can also maybe talk to someone else at the church and see if doing a video with watermark in the corner with the churches name would be a good idea. If you get people on your side you can stick a watermark through the entire video and if she tries to use it for something else your churches name will be stuck on the video.

Like been said copy protection can only be done at a replication facility but even then a little googling and someone can get around it. The only advice I can give you is be choosey with your clients. If she is going to be difficult to work with do you really need the work? Also does she expect a discount? I would not devalue your time and effort.

Good luck

Problematic or dishonest clients can cost you time, stress, and actually cause you to lose money and sleep. They are almost never worth dealing with. Just be polite about it.

There is this software , but, yes, Windows only and you need to be using their pricey disc duplicator, but it's a viable solution for a small duplicating business to offer copy protection for small run clients.

Someone brought me a disc that I think was copy protected with this software. Took me ages to figure out how to get around it (but I do love a challenge), and if it can fool me it'll stop most mere mortals.

Standard copy protection is easy to get around. Handbrake sees all.

Of course, none of this happened in real life. It was just a dream.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I think I may be able to use the watermark option.

I don't copy-protect my DVDs - too low quality :P

three things to know:
• the 'real' copy protection of commercial DVDs is in a sector no dvd-r has - as mentioned above: only glass-mastered, 'pressed' disks offer that

• the copy-protection created with those Windows apps are the infamous 'killer tracks' - off-standard sequences written on disk, which a player ignores as 'error', but any copy program will make to stumble
... but there are copy.apps which will copy that too ... ;)

• the Russian way!
I once described that method on my website:
sites.google.com/site/karstenschluter/diy-dvd-copy-protection
.. you damage the disk to create an un-copy-able error ... oh ooh

is this clever? no.
is stealing clever? no either. :woohoo:

stick a moving watermark onto your movie ....
