Putting transitions on a compound clip I assume is supposed to be easy, what am I doing wrong!!

I have been doing a project in fcp x it is fun and frustrating all at the same time. I am sure a lot has to do with getting used to things, but putting transitions on compound clips seems to be overly difficult. I have been putting 4 layers of video in a cc (compound clip) and I thought all you had to do is just put the transition on and fcp will figure it out. Unfortunately it has not. It involves me having to hop in to the cc and drag out a whole bunch of handles, then I have to go back in my project get my ins and outs back to where they were and then finally the transition will apply.

What am I or fcpx doing wrong?
