Audio Sync Gives me Blank screen

Ok everyone...Next in my current series of 'stupid questions' is this...

I've used the sync feature in FCPx and it seems to do its job fine. However when I view the newly created synched file, only a small percentage of it has vision, the rest is just black screen!

Clearly I'm doing something wrong but what? To do the sync is a simple enough procedure, select audio an video files to sync, right click blah blah....simple! So why am I getting the black screen?

Cheers

When you sync clips, it creates a flavor of a Compound Clip, a Sync Clip. Any flavor of Compound Clip (CC, Sync, Multicam) can have that black space in it. It's very logical.

You have two sources, a video and an audio. Chances are the Start record and Stop record buttons were not hit at the same exact moment during the shoot. So when sync'ed, you'll have some overlap at the head or tail of the Sync Clip. Where that audio exists, and the video doesn't, the overlap, is black.

What I'd do is create that sync clip, then right-click it and "Open In Timeline", check it out, see what's what under the hood.

Thanks BenB...I appreciate you taking the time.

I can follow what you said but would that still explain more than half the clip being just blank screen but with audio?

Did you actually open it into its own timeline and look at it?
Can you do that and post a screen capture of it?

Hi BenB

I didn't have loads of time until this weekend when I did as you said and checked it out...it seems that my answer was in there and the black screen seems to have gone once in the timeline!

Each clip seems to be synced and I have three audio channels...2 from the camera and my external source, so I think I have resolved it...fingers crossed...thanks for your help
