Best Macbook Pro Retina setup

I have the latest Macbook Pro Retina with 2.3 GHz 8GB running FCP X.
I'm doing my masters, so I'm on a student budget. I'm also a bit new to FCP and understand it is better to run my footage from a separate drive (I need more space anyway).
Could someone advise me of a good setup at a sensible price, I would need a drive size suitable for around 10hrs of Apple Pro Res 422 footage, so I'm guessing around 1 TB should do it or if it does not slow things down too much? 2 TB as a two disc raid, one to back up.
The laptop is nice and speedy, so I don't want to bottleneck it too much with the drive if poss, it has Thunderbolt ports, but is it worth paying the extra when money is tight or would USB 3 be cheaper?
Sorry this is a bit of a lame question, it's just the posts about this were years old. Anyone got a setup like mine and can recommend products?
I do have an older Mac Pro 2009 with cinema screen but my new Retina is faster so was thinking of using it with the cinema screen and keyboard thus running the two screen option.

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best options for Thunderbolt drives on a budget and came up with this pretty awesome ghetto solution, but it seems to be faster than some of the real thunderbolt drive tests I've seen on YouTube.
Basically I got a Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt adaptor and plugged an internal Seagate Barracuda 6G 3TB drive into it. It's just a regular SATA connection so you can put any SATA drive in it, it's just a little loose so you gotta put something between the drive and the adaptor and then put a rubberband around it (ghetto part).
But the great thing about this solution is that your Thunderbolt drive has the fastest drive in it (other than SSD). Most of the cheaper Thunderbolt drives have 5400RPM drives which just seems stupid if you're selling a the fastest drive interface out there.
It works for me because I have an iMac and don't need to move it. It's super ghetto and sketchy looking, but I like it because it's different.
It also looks like the Little Big Disk is on sale super cheap right now at Amazon.

Thanks Julian, I would love to see some photos of your Ghetto Adaptor and HD!
This is really helpful, I am surprised others have not commented on using the new Macbook pro retina?

Hi Rudgey. I have the MBPro, 15", 16gb ram, 512SSD. i run an Apple cninema display off it and my main disc for storing the project that I'm editing on is a Hitachi USB 3, 3 tb so it has plenty of space.
I find the speed of this setup a significant improvement over my 2010 macpro, with plenty of ram.
I'm happy with the USB3 disc. It runs high quality playback fine (mixture of Canon 300 and XF305 footage). I use older usb 2 drives for backup. I think Tb drives will be faster than the USB3 but as i'm happy with my setup I'll wait till the price comes down. Hope that's helpful.

I use a brand new 15" rMPB maxed on RAM, GPU, internal SSD. I use an Elgato SSD bus powered T'bolt drive. I can play a composited stack of 4 REDRAW R3D native clips with little enough stutter to still edit just fine off that Elgato drive. I need bus power, as I'm often on the road using it, or traveling to teach seminars and classes.
