Help...I'm on deadline.

Trying to export a project as mpg4 file. In 10.0.6 I can not find the option that earlier versions had...tried apple devices 1080 with h264....video quality is terrible. How do I do this export as mpg4??

Thanks

Jim

If you need an H.264 file (also referred to as MPEG-4 part 10 or AVC) you can use Share > Master File and in the Master File export window set Video Codec to H.264.

If you need an MPEG-4 file you will need Compressor to do the conversion, or you can Share > Master File to ProRes and use MPEG Streamclip to convert the master file to MPEG-4.

If you don't have MPEG Streamclip: it's an outstanding free encoding app and you can get it here: www.squared5.com

Pick the Apple Devices preset you want. In settings in the Format popup select Computer. That's the equivalent of the old Mac/PC settings and spits out an .mp4 file.

Totally agree, Tom. But the video quality of the Computer H.264 setting is about 50% lower than when you use the H.264 setting in the Master Destination.

Yes, but that's a QuickTime file. I thought he wanted the equivalent of what was in the earlier versions.

How about converting with QT7 to H.264 and renaming the resulting extension to .mp4. That's what I do and makes for a more friendly windows environment playback.

Thanks Tom Computer got me mpg4 mov. Although in past a 30 min Mac/PC mov was about 2gb and using "computer" it is now about 4gb ??

What file format and work flow do you recommend for best quality archive movie of a fcpx 1080p hd project?

For the best quality archive you should use Master File, but it will be a very large file. This is what you want to use to compress smaller, lower res files.

He can do a quick re-wrap with the free MpegStreamclip :
• open the .mov
• go straight to the 'save as' dialog and choose from the drop-down 'mp4' as wrapper

>>> no conversion, just a new media-container, done in seconds ....

I like to recommend MSC as 'poor man's Compressor' ;)
