updated FCPX keeps asking for dual layer media- never use to was created by hoss
Hey everyone;
Updated FCPX to 10.0.6.
Now when we try to burn to DVD it no longer likes the single layer 4.7 DVD-R, it keeps insisting we need dual layer.
We tape government meetings that can go for two hours. Our workflow has been the same for years and FCPX has been in place since launch. It as happily been creating DVDs of said government meetings - perfectly - with no requests for dual layer media...
... until the latest update. All three updated computers are flashing the same message at me right now. (It will use single layer for shorter meetings.)
Why? If I have to start shelling out for dual media i will, but what did Apple do to cause this and... why?
And is there a work around?
Thank you for any help you can give.

Try exporting a disk image and burning the disk image.

2 hours is pretty much all the old DVD specs ever demanded. You could get more on them, but with manual encoding. Check that your project isn't over 2 hours long total length. I'm suspect that 2 hours may be the magic preassigned number FCP X has been given to switch to dual layer. I'm just guessing, though.

Thanks for responding guys.
All 3 machines have meetings ranging from 1.5 to 2 hours. None are over - all are under 2 actually, so it's not that unfortunately.
On the disc image, i'll try it but the Why still sits there. Why is this happening from this update?
Ah, am I the only group that's having this problem?
PS We ran permissions on the apples just to take that out of possibilities.

You'll probably need to get some dual layer discs.

This is definitely a bug. ;( You'll see that the size estimates for your 2 hour timeline in the share window are coming in a single layer size, but when the transcoding is finished, regardless if you make a disc or save to the HD, the size will be about double. I actually discovered this on day 1 of 10.0.6 and got a rather detailed report off to Apple after running many tests.
Fortunately there is a workaround if you have compressor. Just sending your timeline to compressor and to MPEG2 setting that will hold more than about 1.5 hr of content. (you will notice that the default MPEG2 setting is for about 2.5 GB/hour. So I'm pretty sure you'll need to lower the data rate). The other is to buy those dual layer discs, but they are pricey as you know. However, pretty much all the recent DVD burners will support it.
If you think about it the entire FCP X share function is completely reworked, and frankly quite good. They have made a pretty fantastic workflow for exporting (but we could use batch). At least there is a workaround with compressor.

Hello - I've been using FCP for years - I just updated it prior to my current project, and as I was clicking the "update" button or whatever it said, I had that momentary thought that I should have read what the update was, are there any bugs/glitches, etc.
Sure enough, used same computer, burner, and DVDs I've used the last 2 years and got the error that I had inserted the wrong media. Project is 1 hour and 5 minutes.
Thankfully I have Compressor, so I will try that.
Question though - how much longer do you think DVDs will even be an option? We have kids who are teens and only the oldest (20) even uses a DVD sometimes. New iMacs don't even have a DVD drive.
My last order (I do dance recitals, weddings etc) for dance recital DVDs, I offered the option of an online link and/or a thumb drive, and NO one took it (granted all the people ordering were close to my age, used to DVDs.)
I feel like it won't be long before DVD isn't an option. (and my Primera 4051 for DVD burning and printing will be worth nothing...
(a little background, been doing video production since VHS, laserdisc (yes, it was a thing) etc., working in a newsroom or production - so offering my video editing skills to my fellow dance Moms seemed like a good idea and I make a little money doing it)
Any thoughts/advice/opinions?
