Looking to try an external Thunderbolt drive for editing with my MBP (not retina) for times when I'm doing multicam stuff when I need faster performance.
I'm only looking for a 1 - 2TB drive to be portable with my MBP, who's using what out there?

I have an Elgato bus powered SSD T'bolt dirve, it isn't 1TB, though plenty fast enough. Not the fastest T'bolt drive around, but plenty fast.
I have worked with someone else's system for about 2 weeks in the past. It was a MPB (non-retina) with a 2TB LaCie T'bolt drive. It screamed. I was very much impressed.
If you can afford one of the Promise RAID drives, they're probably the best on the market now. But they're all pretty sweet.
I've read some bad reviews about something called a "Buffalo" drive.

Thanks Ben
I'm only going to try out one on my MBP first because it has a TB port. Long term I am looking for something like the Promise system but that only when I upgrade my 2009 MP
My friend mentioned the Buffalo drives they are much cheaper than the aforementioned drives but to me that only tells you one thing that they are not up to scratch and the quality has been compromised.

I have a G-Raid 4Tb T-bolt drive from G-Technology. Love it.
I've only recently gotten into FCPx after having done too many long multi-cam videos in iMovie (don't ask; it's painful!) When I first got the drive, I pulled up a 45 minute multi-cam video in iMovie that would be a dog when scrubbing. Scrubbed through it all with fantastic performance. I used iMovie as a Litmus test since it doesn't do caching and file management well like FCPx.
Like Ben mentioned, I've heard the Promise drives are stellar. This was great for me. Nice and quiet, too, since they are in an aluminum chassis with minimal fan.
They make smaller raids.

Yes having looked around for pricing it is only another £200 or so difference from a Lacie 2TB drive to one of the 4TB G Raid drives so I think I will have a look at one of them for my MBP. Then if Apple decide to release a new MacPro next year sometime I will defiantly have a look at a Pegasus
