After searching for hours for help I gave up. Can anyone help get me on the right path with getting an effect to pass behind an object on the original clip???
Thanks

Not sure what you mean about getting an effect (filter or generator) to pass behind an object on the original clip (meaning a object in the video clip itself)?
If this is the case you will need todo some compositing and god old rotoscoping technic.
Can be done in Apple Motion if you have this I would prefer After Effects.

There's a fairly easy way, I think I learned this from Ben. Please excuse my vernacular at trying to describe this not knowing all the technical terminology.
If you have your main subject isolated against a lighter background (sky, building, wall, etc), then you add your secondary clip below it & lower its opacity to around 50-70 percent, then pull up a garbage mask & isolate your subject. Now you can have the effect flow across the frame on top of the wall, sky or building, yet behind your subject. I achieved this to an acceptable level of success the very first time I tried it. In my case I had huge frame height colored text scrolling by the subject, behind him on a wall. I had to adjust the opacity & angle of the text to get it so it looked good. If you really want to experiment you can get into all the blend modes too.
Have fun.
