Hello,

What is the best os for running FCPX? Is Mountain Lion faster for FCPX.
Right now I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 but I wondered if the upgrade to Mountain Lion gives me any speed changes?
Also, I'm using an nVidia 8800 GTS 640 Mb in my desktop and would like to upgrade my GPU?
5770 or 5870 speed differences?
Also, has anyone tried the GTX570 installed and compared it to the two ATI cards?

Thanks

OS X 10.8.2 will give you some minor performance and stability. It will also keep you up to date, as SL will not be supported forever. I'm using the ATI Radeon 5870 and love it. I'd also recommend a minimum of 12GB RAM if not 16. And be sure all Events and Projects are NOT on the system drive, but on secondary internal drive(s) that's 7200rpm.

Yes indeed, Ben did mean to say OSX 10.8.2 mountain lion. He is wishfully thinking of two updates from now of FCPX :woohoo:

sjoeze,
I suggest you check out some of the speed test done over at Bare Feats. Rob does a good job at comparison testing. See links below and be sure to check the index for more.
Your 8800 is long in the tooth, much better performance can be gotten for a modest investment.
Choosing the best card thou, is more involved than just what is fastest card. What programs you run can play a big part in choice. If you run Adobe CS programs, I recommend you look into nVidia cards that can run "cuda". Big performance boost.
I'm running a PC version of Radeon 6870 in a MP1.1 and no problems. Much cheaper than 5870 ~ same performance.
As to OS versions, Rob has some comparisons here is link for Lion vs ML www.barefeats.com/mtlion.html
Here are links on various cards including non-blessed "PC" cards....

Be sure to compare cards in same computer set up to avoid apples to oranges, i.e. the comparison of rMBP 650m does not compare equally with the MP 3.3 Ghz/24GB ram. When the test is run in the same machine, then you get fair comparison.
Search the index if you want comparisons of 8800 vs 5870/5770 or SL vs Lion
Have fun!
In general the 5870 is about 2X faster than the 5770.
