New Sharing Options - How to control where it goes?

Hello,

In the recent FCPX update, I can't figure out how to specify where I want to save the finished product (Say I choose the option to create an "Apple Devices" formatted video). But I can't see any option to put it on the desk top, for instance, or for that matter any location of my own choosing.

In the last version, I could exactly specify where I wanted the file saved, be it the desktop or a folder I've created

Is there any way to control where the file goes?

And if that's not possible, then where does the shared file go?

Thank you

Steve

I have a little article about Destinations. Once you hit the "Next" button in your share window, you will be presented with a Finder window in which you can specify where to write the file to.

In the Share module go to settings. The default for Apple devices is the iTunes library. Set the Add to playlist popup to Do Nothing and the Share button will change to Next. This is just as in the previous versions, except a little more obtuse perhaps.

Thank you. I was actually doing that, but until I rebooted the computer several times I wasn't getting the choice of where to save the file. Seems to be working now. (It's also taking a lonnnnnnnnnggggggggg time to reformat all of the existing files for the updated version, so wondering if that had something to do with it. I temporarily disabled background rendering so I could get some work done)

Thanks. I think I've got it now (I couldn't get your link to work, though)

@Steve Not sure how many projects and events you are updating, but I allowed FCPX to update about 30 projects, all HD and associated events (about 100 to 300 HD clips in each) and it smoked right through them in about a minute.

Just wondering if you have a slow computer, inefficient system configuration or if you have an enormous amount of projects and events.

Other than being pretty sure I have a suitable computer (new MacBook Pro & an enormous external hard drive) I honestly don't know about the suitability of my system configuration. On the computer + external drive combined there are about 40 hours of HD video stored. But usually that drive is disconnected -- only use it to back up material.

I'm a real neophyte with video editing, it's kind of been thrust upon me as an ancillary part of my job, so I don't really know what type of performance to expect from the software/hardware.

I do know that the software crashes a few times a week. Hoping the update addresses that.

Thanks

A real potential problem that may be causing your crashes is that it sounds like you generally have your Final Cut projects and events folders located on your system drive in the MacBook. This will surely compete with the system drive running the OS and is NOT a suitable configuration.

If you can move the Final Cut projects folder and Final Cut Events folders to your external drive and leave the internal drive just for the OS and applications you will see much better performance and reliability.
If this is not possible, it will be rough sledding trying to do any substantial editing and I recommend you get some additional external storage as soon as practical.

So, are you saying move ALL the event and project folders to the external drive, or to move everything other than the the project or two that I'm working on at the time?

That's correct. Do this from inside the application. There are move and duplicate functions to do this,

ALL. Or at a minimum the events and projects that you are currently using. If you are not including media in your events you also want the media source to be on a drive other than your system drive.

I seem to recall that when I have done this, that I have to change some file preferences, because I duplicated the projects & events to the external drive, then deleted the original events. When I tried to open the projects, they were completely "red screens of doom" because they couldn't access the events anymore. Somehow I got it straight but it was an accidental victory.

Do NOT duplicate or copy from the finder. Use FCPX by dragging the event/project from its current location to the icon representing the external drive.

Oh Yes! I learned that lesson the hard way. To be safe for this mass migration of projects, I'm selecting the option that moves all referenced events with the project.

If you simply want to "move" events and projects to a different drive, you can do it in the Finder just fine. As long as you delete the originals after the copy is finished and has been tested as safe and sound.

If you want two copies of an event for project on the same or even different drives, at the same time, you should do it inside FCP X.

Here's what happens:
Each Event and Project is a mini-database with a unique database ID. When you copy them in the Finder, you end up with two copies that have the same database ID. FCP X will only open the first one it finds, and warn you that the second one won't be opened, due to conflicting IDs.

When you duplicate things inside of FCP X, it assigns a new, unique ID to the new database copy, so that both can exist on the same system just fine.

Finally, never "move". Bad idea. Always "copy", then test the new copy, and when it is proven to be in tact and stable, delete the original. A "move" command copies the original to the new destination, then immediately deletes the original. So that if the copy was bad and got corrupted, you could be screwed.

Thanks for the explanation. I noticed when I looked in Finder that trying to sort out which files were what completely baffled me.

One thing I would like to continue doing is keeping one or two projects on the laptop so that I can work on the move. Sometimes I need to be able to show someone the project--particularly a couple folks who have been helping me troubleshoot when I mess things up or can't figure something out. Then I can the finished project files to the external drive.

This forum has been a wonderful source I wish I had looked into sooner. Thanks again to everyone who has pitched in and shared their knowledge.
