Does 10.0.6 really not include the ability to color correct/compare two items from the Event Library

I've searched through past thread topics and I apologize if this issue has already been addressed but....

While playing with the added/improved features that have been ushered in through the 10.0.6 update, I've come across a glaring mistake: You still can't compare two clips from the Event Library in the new dual viewer option, which would be perfect for color correcting clips in an edited sequence. As far as I can tell, you can only compare a clip from the Project Library and a clip from the Project Library in the new dual viewer option.

I have no idea how Apple could have made such an obvious mistake surrounding one of the things that could truly make this a professional tool. Whether I've missed something extremely obvious or a trick that isn't entirely intuitive, does anyone have any advice? Even if it's just the best way to contact Apple to request - what I imagine would be - a fairly easy fix.

Thanks.

Patrick

I use match frame ( shift - f ) to bring up the original unaltered clip into my event viewer and then grade my clips in the main viewer. I have a side-by-side reference the same way I did in FCP7.

Not sure if this was exactly what you are asking about but this works great for me, a much missed feature.

EDIT: Now I realize you must be talking about comparing clips in the timeline side by side. Like in FCP7 I’d “load previous edit, etc.” into my viewer to compare color-grading multiple angles within my timeline, yea I’d like to see that feature return.

Patripal,

If you want to compare two event clips and colour correct one of them, you can do this by using the 'Open in Timeline' command on the clip you want to correct. The command is in the Clip menu (and the context pop-up menu you access when you control- or right-click the clip you want to modify).

If the event viewer is open, you can open another event clip to compare with the clip you are changing.

but you cannot do this with clips that are already in the timeline. something you could do in fcp legacy by double clicking on the clip you want to open in the viewer and then compare it to another in the canvas.

Thank you for the responses. I messed up the original post title....it should be "Why can't you compare two items from the Project Library?"

BenderMac and Mickey G - Yea, that's what I was trying to say....I'm looking to compare two clips from the timeline side-by-side. The 'Open in Timeline' option doesn't help because it's essentially the same as just scrolling over any clip in the Project Library. And comparing an original clip from the Event Library and an edited/color corrected clip from the Project Library seems unnecessary to me (for cc purposes) - why would you want to match a clip that you are color correcting (Project Library) to one that you can't (Event Library).

To me this is absolutely useful!

Have you ever worked in Color or any other Color-grading application and turned your grade on/off to check progress or just reference the work-in-progress to the original?

Same idea having the original untouched clip loaded in the event viewer, its very easy to monitor work-in-progress clips against the originals without any grades/effects applied instead of having to constantly check/uncheck effects or swap out what version of a clip is being showed in the 1 viewer.

Mickey - very true. That is a really helpful (and much needed) addition. I guess I was just mainly targeting the ability to match two scenes, not see the progress you've made on one clip. It doesn't make sense to me how Apple would install this feature for judging your process on one clip and no install the feature to judge your process on the clips in relation to each other.

Yes what I was describing is just one task I used to use the viewer in FCP7 for and I’m glad its back in FCPX for this task, however it still needs much functionality restored.

I would love for Apple to implement the features you described and we absolutely need it. Have you used the “match color” feature in FCPX?
The reason I ask is because when you select to match color on a clip it brings up basically a 2-up displaying showing you’re selected clip and also a visual of all the clips you scrub over.

I’m sure I screwed up that description but anyway my point is I’d like to see this same window arrangement but give us control to put any clips we want in this two-up display for matching grades within a timeline.

The main viewer shows what's at the playhead. In 10.0.6, the playhead doesn't jump to a clip if you select it (unless you option-click the clip).

We now have a Viewer for looking at clips in the event library. Perhaps one day there will be a Skimmer Viewer option: show whatever the skimmer is over.

More viewer options:

- The Nth previous/next clip from the playhead clip.

- A selection viewer - whether the clip is in the event library or on the timeline - with its own inspector
