Is FCPX almost feature complete?

If they add these three things I can't think of anything else I world desire

1) Role Mixer
2) bezier masking
3) Basic tracking

Seems like one more major release and the devs retire.

Oh no chance.

If by feature complete you mean complete to make a film...it was that at 10.0.0

If you mean complete in a sense of what other NLEs do or did, maybe yes. But I am sure they are just starting with Roles and mostly how the whole database paradigm will work in a multi-seat environment. I would also expect FCPX to soon transport the projects (not the media yet) into the cloud.

FCPx is so revolutionary that we as normal users after one year probably have no idea where this will actually get us to. As has been said before.....FCPX is going where the puck will be....

Decades ago I worked for a company that had an Apple II database program. I was doing tech support...the owner/programmer once said to me, "No great program is ever finished."

Apple publicly stated just after the initial release of X that they had a ten year development plan in place. So, yeah, nothing is ever finished.

Maybe there are better related questions to ask.

Does FCPX now have equivalent feature set to FCP7? It's way ahead in many areas, still needs improvements in a few. It's close.

Does FCPX now have a complete equivalent feature set compared to Premiere Pro and/or Media Composer? I can think of a few areas where I'd hope there are improvements in FCPX.

Maybe Dynamic Trimming in the Timeline (MC)
Better round tripping to Motion (PP and AE).

The day anyone can program 500 new features into an application in 3 months, rest assured that Apple will be the first to do it. Until then, programming is very time consuming, we will get a few features at a time. I'm simply grateful for what we have now, and I have no issues getting my work done for my clients. I've no use for PPro, MC, PS, or AE. My tool set works great for me: FCP X, Motion, Compressor, Pixelmator, Sketch, Blender, Studio Artist.

Are there things I'm looking forward to seeing in FCP X? Yes. Am I worried about them today? Not one bit. I'm busy learning the new tools and getting work done.

I think by looking back at 10.0.0 compared to 10.0.6 it's starting to look very evident that the earliest adopters have had a great advantage by really getting to know the guts of a bare bones but powerful NLE. It might not be that long before the FCPX learning curve becomes quite a steep one. As from day 1 I'm still liking the direction it's going.

For me it's a fully customisable interface, good round-tripping with Motion and the addition of Logic Pro X round tripping. Then I'll be one happy camper.

But I love the idea of bezier masks!

The big things for me are to get some dynamic trimming happening with the Event Monitor being involved with the timeline, a nice tracker for secondaries and to get the key framing all sorted or preferably parameter behaviours.

It might be a bit of topic but FCPX is fine at it is, Motion and Logic where the loving is needed!

With the updates in 10.0.6, FCPX is fairly complete now on a single user basis. But, there are two important areas remaining, and I think they'll be addressed in some form by the early part of next year...

-Collaborative editing: Proper Xsan/ Shared Storage integration and the features described in Alex Gollner's article on multi-user locks will really increase Pro adoption on larger projects and at bigger facilities.

-FCPX App Store: It seems clear that Apple will take care of features required by the broader user base, but niche features like EDL/OMF/AAF export will be supplied by 3rd parties. The way to make access to these add-on tools efficient will be through a market, also described by Alex here . Once that's available it will allow FCPX to handle the requirements of users who are held back by a few small, but important features critical to their workflow.

With a little luck these will be addressed in 2013, and I'm very sure given the trajectory we've witnessed so far, we'll see FCP quickly gain traction in areas where FCP7, Avid, and Premiere are currently holding their ground.

Ben - I know this is going to sound petty, but Pixelmator doesn't seem to have the ability to do an arbitrary rotation adjustment. Is there a work around for this? Also, I noticed that if you right click on pictures in the photo browser, the options are to open in I-Photo or Aperture. Is there a way to reset that so you have other options? Right now, I use I-Photo and make my finer adjustments in Photoshop. I'm not sure what advantage there is switching to Pixelmator. thx

This really should be another thread since we're drastically changing subjects.

I use Aperture and Pixelmator. I am able to do all photo retouching in Aperture very quickly and precisely. I do actual graphic work in Pixelmator.

Yes, you can rotate any number of degrees you want. Select the layer to work with, Edit > Transform, rotate and scale away!

No clue what you are right-clicking on. What photo browser are you talking about? Pixelmator or iPhoto or PS? I have Aperture's prefs set so that Pixelmator is my external editor. No clue what browser and right-click you're talking about.

One thing I forgot to mention. Collaborative editing! How could I forget that?
Is there anything in this new version that makes sharing media and projects any easier?

Yup, collaborative editing is likely the one extra thing that apple needs to add to make FCP X a viable option for just about anyone. Benzier masks, tracking are available in Motion.
