So... long time FCP user here finally being forced to explore the future and so I'm looking into FCPX, Avid, and PPro. I hear that FCPX has improved since launch but is still lacking... however, some claim that it can be AWESOME with the right plugins, so I'm asking, which plugins are must have to make FCPX tolerable to use for feature films shot digitally and expected for theatrical release.

Usually for feature films shot digitally and expected for theatrical release you wont be using a Plugin in your NLE.
The after math is done ether before but more most likely after the edit.
So you are good.

Not even X2Pro? It seems kind of vital.

Not a plugin, but Resolve is a very good replacement for Color.
Motion should be on your shopping list.
Depending on your composition needs, you might also want to have a look at Smoke 2013.

ProTools? Check Ardour. ardour.org/

Although I haven't yet used FCPX for such a project, based on what I have read so far I would say you would definitely need X2pro (v2) to get your sound to protools or other. Then, depending on your workflow, you might also need EDL X, that is if the color correction is for instance not done through Davinci Resolve, which takes FCPXML fine, or if the online conforming is done elsewhere. You might want to use EventManager if you're working on different things at the same time, although this is really optional. That's about it I guess. I was forgetting, you might consider also using something like proversioner to really be safe and keep better track of your projects.

BTW, those are not plugins, but separate apps you'll need!

I agree, what was mentioned wouldn't consider as a plugin.

Adjustment layer that had a S-Curve and a Widescreen mask plugin. Those were basically the ones I used for previewing purposes. The "after math" as said was done at the post house after the edit.
