Hi there,
I just downloaded and installed a recent transition called "Puzzle". I seemed to have no problems with installing the transition but whenever i use it, all that comes up in the rendered preview is a blue screen.

Has anyone else had this problem and knows how to fix it, or does anyone know how to fix this?

Im running Final Cut Pro X version 10.0, OSX 10.7 (mountain lion). Thanks :)

10.7 is Lion, 10.8 is Mountain Lion. Be sure you are on 10.8.2.
FCP X 10.0.? Be sure you're on 10.0.5.

When a transition, effect, generator or title renders as blue, the most likely problem is that your version of Final Cut Pro X is too old. You need to use the Mac App Store to check for updates. This only works if you are signed into the App Store with the same AppleID as you bought your copy of Final Cut Pro X.

In practice most people who provide free transitions, effects, generators and titles update their versions of Motion 5 and Final Cut Pro X when they come out, so any tools they make available after that only work on the newer versions.

If you are choosing which files to download from the

...any free effects and transitions made available after September 20th, 2011 won't work in version 10.0

Free effects and transitions made available after November 16th, 2011 won't work in version 10.0.1 or earlier.

Free effects and transitions made available after January 31st, 2012 won't work in version 10.0.2 or earlier.

Free effects and transitions made available after April 10th, 2012 won't work in version 10.0.3 or earlier.

Free effects and transitions made available after June 11th, 2012 won't work in version 10.0.4 or earlier.

Alex, that's fantastic data! I'd love to copy and paste that to an email for my FCP users group here in Louisiana, with credit to you, of course. Would that be OK?

GREAT post, great info!

FCP X should have a third decimal place on the version number. Can you take a screen shot? If there is no third decimal place that is a number between 0 and 5, you need to launch the Mac App Store and update to 10.0.5. That could be the whole problem, as stated previously.

Also, make sure you are updated to OS 10.8.2.

Of course!

The reason why this problem comes up is that Final Cut Pro X has a copy of Motion built into it, so it can play Motion-generated templates. As Apple update the file format of Motion 5 every time they fix a few bugs or add a couple of features, old versions of Motion can't read the files created by newer versions of Motion - including the Motion 5 hidden inside Final Cut Pro X.
