banding when exporting files

banding when exporting files was created by robs
Hi there, my footage looks fine in FCPX but when I export the files there is a lot of banding introduced on some of the clips (mainly where I have added subtle lighting or smoke particles in post)
The files are from the 5d mk ll 'HD 1080p' imported as optimised media and exported as current sequence settings, (with the ProRes option selected in preferences) Iv also tried compressor and various other settings but the banding is still there.
Is there anything I can do to help reduce the banding?
Thanks

Isn't the banding a feature of the 5d? I thought I had read something to this regard. Is it better if you transcode the footage to a 10 bit format before editing?

Iv shot quite a bit of footage with the 5d before and its been fine ( although they way I shot this particular project might not have helped) I still don't get why if there is no banding inside FCPX then why does the banding appear when you export it as current settings? there should be no compression of any sort should there?
I think your right though 10 bit would be better. Im thinking of upgrading the camera to the BMCC which shoots 10 and 12 bit...if it ever ships!
Thanks for your reply:)

Iv tried to find a shot where the banding is visible on a still, its probably more noticeable when theres movement. Basically where there is supposed to be subtle gradation there are noticeable bands.

contour artefacts (often resulting from 10 bit to 8bit conversion), a little bit of subtle film grain would help, I fight this a lot, it's very annoying

In fcpx under the 'Stylise' effect the 'Add Noise' filter has a Blue Noise 'reduce banding' filter, its work well on some of the footage, still experimenting with it on the footage that seems to be more tricky. I hadn't noticed the Blue Noise filter before.
Adding this grain/noise is helping cheers Lee

This has always been the bane of 8-bit NLEs.

I heard someone say the other day that Adobe had "fixed" the banding problem with CS6 in After Effects. I never found much to back it up though. It does tend to work a little better for creating certain types of gradients. But yours is inherent in the footage itself. The grain idea works pretty well

As Ben said earlier this is an issue since decades ago with 8 bit digital video.
Sony claimed to work with 10 bit and the DigiBetas. But that was only half the truth. After some copies the banding was visible as well.
You could try the "Film Grain" as well.
