Archiving events/projects

Archiving events/projects was created by parkerhqj
I'm now removing older fcpx events & projects to two archive drives from my edit drive which is filling up. I'll be copying to one and then moving to the other. Is this a better way than simply copying the events & projects over in the finder? Thx.

I would go to my project library and duplicate the project with used media.

Use FCPX to move, duplicate, erase, etc. your events and projects as needed. This keeps the applications database updated. Doing these actions thru the finder may cause issues down the road.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I figured.

It may not cause issues. It WILL cause issues.
Never move any FCP X Events or Projects around in the Finder. Don't delete or add anything via the Finder either.
Been there, done that, learned my lesson

Each Event and Project is a mini-database. Each has it's own unique database ID. When duplicating in the Finder, you end up with two that have the same ID, FCPX can only open the first one it finds, the other it can't open.
Duplicating inside of FCPX allows FCPX to assign a unique database ID to the new duplicated Event or Project.

Strange.. I move Projects and Events in the finder all the time, manually or using other apps and I never had any problems.

What "other apps" are you using to duplicate Events and Projects?
Only one copy of a db with a unique ID can be opened by FCPX at one time. No way around it.

Sorry.. My remark was not about archiving, but I use Event Manager X to manage Events + Projects and Pro Versioner for incremental Projects backups every 3 minutes (not very happy with the actual fcpx backup management).
Moving and copying Events and Projects in the finder is basically what these apps do.

Right, you're talking about something very different. Event Manager X "moves", not copies. Pro Versioner isolates project db files, they don't actually live as entire Events or Projects. Not the same thing as making a duplicate copy in the Finder at all.
You can "move" things in the Finder, just fine. Just don't "duplicate" them in the Finder.
