Scanner DPI? was created by Jim
what is the recommended scanner dpi setting for photos I want to use in FCPX?

do I need a scanner that does 2400 or is 1200 enough?

thanks

DPI isn't really relevant for video. You should look at the overal dimensions in pixels (width x height). Scans should be at least the resolution of your sequence if it's going to be a full screen image - higher if you are going to do a Ken Burns. Probably not relevant in your case but for artwork/magazine scans you'll most likely need to use photoshop or something similar to add a tiny amount of blur to prevent moiring (visual buzzing).

Video is only 72dpi so scanning any higher than that is only going to create big problems in FCP.

I often scan at 300 dpi for my master, but then resize to 72 dpi in an image program like Photoshop.

Generally try not to make your images not much more than 2x HD resolution.

So about 3840 x 2160 would allow you to zoom in 200% without quality loss and not cause issues for FCP X.

I have experienced a few occasions (mostly with graphics as opposed to scanned images) where 72dpi has been inadequate and has resulted as a blurry graphic in a HD sequence. With HD video, I would recommend producing graphics at minimum of 96dpi. Hope that helps.

DPI is absolutely meaningless in video. Frame size is frame size, period.
