freehand drawing was created by keithwhite
is there any simple way of doing this in FCPX without going to Motion, Callouts etc? - I just need to add a squiggly line along a part of a map at a certain point in the narration.

You might want to invest in Motion or After Effects.

Do you need it to move, or be stationary?

It looks like callouts does this, check their site to see if it has the flexibility you need.
But honestly, for the time you'll waste looking for another solution- buy Motion.

Use dots (periods) or dashes and layer them to appear to be leading to the second point on the map. That is my suggestion without motion to animate a map or if you have iMovie the have templates on there with maps ready to be animated. My novice advice, anyway :side:

Take a look at this tutorial. It's actually super easy and fast to do in Motion.
www.macprovideo.com/hub/motion/animating-map-lines-in-motion-5
Or use CallOuts.
Either are the best ways to do it.

I have Motion and Callouts. Not what I'm after, if possible.
Stationary superimposition is what I'm after.
Could I perhaps use Photoshop Layers to introduce the highlighted section?
i.e. have the highlight layer turned off as the image appears and then invoke the highlight layer as the narration mentions the specific image.

What do you mean "highlight" layer? You've lost me there. What about my tutorial isn't now what you're after? Knowing that could help me understand what you're trying to do? Can you site a video that already does this?

sorry for the delay in responding _ I've been offline for a while. I've done a workaround using separate Pshop files

Can you post an example? How did you do whatever it was you were having trouble with?

Can't post examples ( NDA) until doco is released ( December)
I made a copy of the map and added the line to it and then dissolved in from the original without the line.

Still not sure what you were trying to do. Best I can understand, you could have done all of that in the blink of an eye in Motion. But as long as you got the effect to work, that's all that matters.
