How Much Do You Lose In A Crash

I am working on my first full client project since we switched from FCP to FCP X. I just had my first crash and lost about 30 minutes of work including adding some stills to the almost finished timeline, making some audio edits, equalization and volume changes and adjustments to which of the three audio tracks would play.

I thought FCP X Autosaved??? Should I have lost all that work? It was a crash of both the App and the system with an automatic computer restart.

If it's a system crash there might well be serious problems. You're lucky the project file wasn't corrupted and lost completely. What kind of system crash? Kernel panic? What OS? What version of the software?

You should look into Pro Versioner.

If the Mac restarted on it's own, you have a serious hardware problem. Have it checked out at an Apple retail store or authorized service center soon. Automatic restarting is not a good sign.

System is new 27 inch iMac 2.7Ghz i5, 12GB RAM, OSX 10.8, FCP X 10.0.5 and also had Logic Express v9.17 open at the same time. The restart screen said because of a problem the machine is restarting and screen was gone before I could read more.

Are you using an external audio interface? If so, don't use two applications that are trying to access the interface at the same time. Especially pro apps. In my experience, this can bring up issues. It could be a driver issue if you are using external hardware.

Actually I was using an Macky Onyx BlackJack for input audio with output to system audio.
